Chapter - Twenty - Two - Flashbacks

Bethany's POV...

I nod slowly, my mind already conjuring up the events of my twelfth birthday and how that month turned out to be the worst month of my whole life instead of being a normal month in a normal year.

"Can we at least sit?" I ask with a troubled sigh, I was silently hyperventilating on the inside while outside I tried, keyword tried, to act calm and collected.

Jack puts his arm around my waist and walks to the entrance of the cave that was hidden by the rock.

I walk numbly, not even feeling the dangling vines running over my skin as we walk through the entrance.

I stare at the floor in silence, trying to figure out how to start my tale. Or how to explain that his tormenter was mine before he was his.

I close my eyes and lean back on the couch, my fingers shaking slightly on my lap as all the memories run through my head painfully slow, everyone making a scar that had healed to burn as the memory reminds me of what it had caused.

Funny how memories work, most think that remembering a moment in their life is like watching a movie, not able to control what happens as they watch, but it was far from it. When you remember a memory, you relive the moment all over again, the only difference being that you can't change your past choices, the choices that haunt you in your present whenever you remember them.

A single lone tear slides down my cheek as I recall the memory that stood out from all the other ones, it was the worst one of that month. I keep saying the month, but the whole experiences took a year for me to get over, it made me hate the month that I was born.

"Brody Crawgers," I mutter as I open my eyes and stare at the stone ceiling above our heads, "Mine and my father's past best friend, the man that I considered as my second father."

"On my twelfth birthday, he wanted to take me to our secret spot, a spot that only me and Sally and he knew about. No one, I mean absolutely no one, knew of that spot. It was a lake that was concealed by a small rock. A cave of some sorts. Sally was with us." I sigh and close my eyes again as I relive the memory.

Flashback...

"Come on, Brody." I giggled as I walked backwards to stare at Brody. He smiled at me and continues to walk slowly with Sally on his shoulders, being careful in his motions so she doesn't fall.

I should've noticed the glint in his eyes and the spring in his steps that wasn't there usually, should've noticed how his smile was wider than normal. Everything was off with him, but I didn't notice anything in my giddiness. He said he wanted to show me a surprise at our lake.

Stupid.

"Wait up, Shorty!" He laughed and Sally giggled from her place on his shoulder. She clapped her hand on his head as he twirled in circles as he moved forward, the little trick caused me to laugh and turn around again to look ahead of me.

"Stop! I'm dizzy." Sally giggled and he laughed in absolute delight.

His laugh was off but I hadn't even give it a thought when I saw the rock that hid our lake inside the Gem cave.

"We're here! We're here! Where's my surprise, Brody?!" I jumped in my place and turned around to look at him.

But he wasn't there, and Sally's giggles couldn't be heard anymore. I smiled and giggled, thinking it was a game of 'Hide and Seek' and I was 'it'
