Stoick struggled to catch up to his young son, who was playfully jumping over rocks half his small height and swatting away bushes and plants.
"Careful, son. You might trip over!" Stoick called, pushing away a stick. All of a sudden, his bubbly and energy-filled Hiccup stopped abruptly. "Son? What's wrong?" Stoick asked.
Hiccup bent down. "Daddy! The birdy! I-It's hurt!"The young boy cried. Stoick looked down to see a small black bird tweeting and calling on the floor, lying at a weird angle.
"Aye, the thing fell out of its nest."
"Can we put it back?" Hiccup asked, worried for the small and fragile thing.
"No. Its wing is broken."
"Can we help it? Please? It's small... l-like me!" Hiccup started sniffling, holding the bird, and Stoick sighed. How could he ever say no to those eyes, that reminded him so much of his beloved wife? He picked up a leaf and a small stick.
"Alright, hold him steady..." Stoick mumbled as he put the broken wing into a splint. "There we go. Now, this bird is your responsibility, you must look after him until he is well enough to fly on his own." Stoick explained. Hiccup nodded eagerly, gently stroking the black bird.
"Alright, do you want to keep going, or go home?" Stoick asked.
"Can we go home? I'm kinda hungry." Hiccup mumbled sheepishly.
"Of course we can, son." Stoick smiled, gently grabbing his son's small hand and walking back to the village.
As they came into the outskirts of the small village by the forge, Hiccup stopped again.
"What's wrong, son?" Stoick asked.
"Can we show uncle Gobber my new bird?" The small boy asked, and Stoick nodded. Hiccup walked into the forge, carefully avoiding all the sharp weapons.
"Uncle Gobber!" Hiccup called, and soon enough, a fairly large blacksmith walked in through a curtain leading to the back room.
"Ello Hiccup! Whatcha got there?" Gobber called, adjusting his hook hand and walking over to the Chief and his son.
"He's my new pet!" Hiccup explained giddily, holding the sleeping bird up for Gobber to see.
"Ah, yes." He tried, he wasn't the best when it came to children as young as Hiccup.
"For now, anyway," Stoick added, and Gobber nodded.
"Right. Have you named him?" The blacksmith asked., and Hiccup's eyes widened inconsiderably.
"Oh yeah! I forgot about that. What should I name him, Daddy?" Hiccup asked his Father.
"I don't know, son," Stoick replied, and there was a moment of silence.
"Well, what does it do?" Gobber helped.
"Well... It's black... and it broke its wing..." Hiccup started.
"David!" Hiccup suddenly cried, making the two adults chuckle.
