Cold wind flies past me, carrying a few fallen leaves and some trash. The mucky streets of Gotham are oddly unfamiliar to me, although I've lived here my whole life. Such a dismal city to grow up in, but it has always been home. I make certain that my hood covers my ears as I walk on.

Shaking my head, I make my way to the precinct. I wanna see how Jim and Harvey are doing since the whole Falcone run-in. They're probably fine, but maybe something's come up that I can help with.

As I walk, I look up at the tall buildings of Gotham. There are so many of them. They look bleak and dull, not like the shining buildings of greater cities. I guess I've never actually been in a greater city, although I have seen pictures in different magazines.

Suddenly, I find myself smacking into someone. Stunned, I stare at him before blubbering an apology. "I'm sorry! I wasn't looking where I was going."

He raises his hands, "It's alright, I assure you."

I look him over. He has black hair that swoops over his forehead in spikes and he wears a fashionable suit.

"I'm Y/n," I introduce myself. I don't know why, but I feel like he could be a good friend or even an ally. I have a feeling that I don't want to be on his bad side.

He sticks out his hand, "Oswald. Pleasure to make your acquaintance."

I smile at him and bow my head before continuing on my path. Straightening my coat, I make my way to the GCPD, spirits high.

"Heya Harv, how's it hanging?" I smack him on the shoulder as I walk up.

"Y/n, what're you doing here?"

I laugh, "Came to say hi to my old friend."

"I ain't that old," he scowls.

Jim walks up to the two of us, "Hey, Y/n."

"Hey Jimmy."

"So, how'd it go with the ol' butler?" Harv says, sipping a mysterious liquid from his flask.

I shrug, "It went well, actually. I was welcomed with open arms and greeted with a great big meal this morning. Let me tell you, Alfred makes a mean breakfast."

They chuckle and get to talking about their newest case. Someone dressed in a suit got murdered with office supplies.

"Ouch, murderous pencil-pusher, eh?"

"Yeah," he frowns. "Actually, I could use help looking at possible crime scenes, if you wanted to?"

Harvey shoots him a glare but I nod eagerly, "Sure, Jim, sounds like fun."

He walks away and I say goodbye to Harv before following Jim. When we're out of earshot, I turn to Jim, "Harvey mad at you or something?"

He shrugs, "Maybe."

At the first abandoned office, we find no signs of foul play. Just a lot of trash and other sorts of things.

"No luck here, eh, Jimbo?"

He sighs and shakes his head in disappointment. The musty air causes me to sneeze a few times, making my hood fall away.

Jim looks to me, "Bless you."

"Thanks."

He keeps looking at me, "Why don't you leave it off?"

"Huh?"

"The hood, you should leave it off."

I roll my eyes, "Last time I checked, you weren't in charge of my wardrobe, Jimmy."

"You're right, sorry. It's just, people'll get used to it eventually."

"I know but. . . I'm not even used to it yet."

He nods, "I understand."

"So, next building?"

"Next building," he agrees.

~

We have no luck at this one either.

"Not our lucky day, eh, Jim." I say, kicking over a rotting chair.

He sighs in agreement.

~

We make it to the third address on our list and start investigating. We don't stray too far from each other, in case the murderer is here.

Three cages house three people in the middle of the office area.

I stare at the cold steel with apprehension. My heart rate accelerates as memories flood through me. I know what it's like to be trapped and I hated every second of it. My first impulse to to flee. A cage means that there is a captor lurking somewhere.

"Is anyone else here?" Jim questions them.

The hairs on the back of my neck raise, but it's too late of a warning.

Electricity rushes through me making my body go limp and my eyes to shut.
