Making it home

Annika's POV
A rapping on my bedroom door startled me from my flipping of channels. Frankly I don't understand how I could get all the channels I did and I'm in the underworld.

Getting up I quickly shuffle over to the door to open it. Grabbing the handle I pull to reveal the same little maid who was here earlier, Korey Anne.

"My lady." She says slightly bowing. "The lord Hades is in the dining hall awaiting your arrival. He says you've both missed dinner tonight." She says. I think back to when we were in the little cabin and realize we didn't eat dinner. My mother slaved over the stove only for us to not eat it. Guilt seeps into my body and I feel the homesickness come on slightly.

"I'm not very hungry." I state lying. I haven't eaten in almost forever it seems like. Maybe yesterday was the last time I ate, but that was in an entirely different world.

"Oh no my lady, the lord insist that you dine with him." She states slightly stomping her foot. Nodding I pull her in and close the door.

"What does one wear to dine with a king?" I ask embarrassed.

"Oh! I wouldn't know in the slightest!" Korey yelps. I give her puppy dog eyes and pout at her until she helps me.

"Fine Fine m'lady I'll help, but I cannot guarantee you'll be satisfied with my efforts." She states as she walks over to my now clothes filled closet. She investigated my closet like a murder scene slowly. I anxiously wait for her outside of the closet scared that Hades is waiting for me downstairs.

"THIS!" She says. Walking out she carries a knee length dress. It's another simple fitting black (like most of my clothes) dress with spaghetti straps. I nod and run to the bathroom to throw it on. If this is my destiny then I better help the universe out a little bit.

I quickly brush my teeth, and brush through my midnight black hair. When I walk out of the bathroom Korey Anne is holding up a pair of black sandals.

"I figured you'd like shoes." She said kneeling so she can strap them in for me.

"No Korey, I've got it." I say taking them from her and buckling them swiftly.

"Follow me to the dining area." She says walking to my door. I trot after her closing my door in the process.

The walk was faster than I thought it would be. I hadn't noticed before, but Hades home is huge. There's many doors to many different rooms, but like everything else in here it's very plain. Not much decoration, and no family pictures.

We make it to a hallway when I bump into Korey.

"I'm sorry Korey!" I say. I hadn't been watching where I was going and I felt terrible from bumping into such a small person.

"It's alright. The king Hades is around the corner from here." She states pointing in the direction we had just been walking. "Just go straight and turn right and you'll see." She walks away, but not without giving a small curtesy.

"Alright." I motivate myself to move forward, and just like Korey said I find myself in the dining area. This seems to be the most extravagant area in the house so far. The table was made of milk chocolate colored wood. It was as long as a table in the Harry Potter movie and I nearly gasped for I had never seen a table so large. The seats were gold with white cushioning and looked utterly comfortable. Beyond the table the white walls and high ceiling seemed as if they belonged in a fairytale. A large fireplace burned yet another blue fire. I noticed Hades seated at the head of the table watching me observe his dining area.

"Good evening." I said slightly waving.

"Good evening to you as well." He said dryly. I hugged in annoyance hoping he caught on. "Please, come sit." He gestured to the seat right next to him to his left. I walked over hoping I didn't trip the entire way there.

I bet he's in your head right now.

I sat down next to him, and the awkwardness started to seep through the cracks. Luckily I'm not a shy or boring person, so I took it upon myself to make the most out of the situation.

"Your home is beautiful Hades." I state.

"Thank you. I designed it myself." He responded. Although he didn't show any facial emotion I could see the nostalgia in his eyes. His eyes seemed to say a lot. I hadn't noticed it before, but there's a lot about Hades you could learn by just looking into his eyes.

"Dinner is served." Someone says from behind me. I turn around and find two people dressed in a waiter attire. One waiter goes to the left of Hades while they other also comes to my left. They each hold silver platters waiting to serve us. Placing it down in front of us Hades' waiter speaks when they remove the lids.

"Brown rice with a light sea salt, asparagus, and a leg of lamb to tie the meal together." I stare at the man questioning if this is truly what he serves his "king" on a daily. That's the most basic meal ever. Let me get in the kitchen and the whole kingdom, living and dead, would desire a taste.

"Thank you chef." I hear Hades say. I transfer my questioning look from the meal to him.

"What's wrong with your nose?" I hear a loud mouth Hades say. Coming to my senses I realize I had been staring for a little longer than I thought.

"I scrunch it when I'm thinking."

"Hmm. Well eat up Annika, it's already nightfall and you need rest." He says biting into his leg of lamb. I followed his actions and took a bite of the lamb, and let me just say it was icy.

"Ack!" I yelped.

"Annika, did your mother never teach you manners?"

Did yours ever teach you to not be an ass?

"Of course she did. The food is just very cold and it took me by surprise." I hold in my snarky response.

"Odd that you say your food is cold when mine is hot." He says grabbing a fork to stab a piece of asparagus.

He's accusing me of being a liar.

"Claim what you want Hades, but I know what I know, and I know this food is Wendy's frosty temperature." With that I dismiss myself and take my plate to the doors I saw the two men disappear to. I walk in to find them playing a game of poker on a small table in the back corner of the room. When they notice me after a few seconds they scramble to clean it up.

"We apologize my lady." The one who served me said. Each of them bowed their heads to me and my mood changed from shock to mere uncomfortableness.

"No, I don't mind at all!" I quickly push out. "No need to apologize to me. I simplify game in to tell you my food was cold, and I don't mean to be a bother at all I-" I was cut off when a servant came from nowhere and took the plate from my hand.

"No problem m'lady." The plump woman says waddling over to the microwave to heat the food. "And about us apologizing" She says turning towards me after putting the food in for a minute and thirsty seconds "the master Hades told us to treat you like you are our Queen as he is our king."

"He said what?" I say slightly taken aback. Me being here is only meant to be a test to see if I'd be a fit for the crown, not to hand me it without analyzing my abilities first!
