I all but glare a hole into the piece of A4 paper in front of me. I’ve paired almost all of us till only five names remain. Cole Matthews, Isabella Paxton, Ryan Davis, Megan Sanders and Ruby Dolan.
See, a couple of months ago, I’d have no problem pairing Cole and Megan together, Ryan and me, and chucking Ruby into another team but now? The thought of me and Ryan alone in the woods together makes my breakfast want to come up, talk less of Cole and Megan.
Now again, another thing I could do is put me and Cole together, Ryan and Megan, then chuck Ruby into some other group.
That, I’m all for but what kind of person would I be if I deprived Cole of the opportunity to be with the girl he likes just for my own selfish reasons?
I sigh and very reluctantly write down Cole and Megan side by side.
There’s no way in hell I’m going to wander around the woods in a bubble of awkwardness with Ryan so I put the remaining three names together.
I’m going to regret it but at least Cole will be happy. These days, that’s all I want.

“Okay girls, take ten”
Tess doesn’t hesitate to collapse unto the floor next to me, reaching up and pulling me and Chelsea down with her.
“I know we all hate Nicole Bitchman but this whole thing is supposed to be fun B, my thighs are not having fun” she groans.
I wince, glancing at the rest of the exhausted girls around me. Ever since my encounter with Nicole, I might have become hell bent on putting the snarky bitch in her place by schooling her team during the competition.
What I promised my girls would be a load of fun, I’ve now turned into a full blown competition, even incorporating one of our most complex routines into it. Needless to say, no one’s thighs are having fun.
“I’m sorry” I sigh, brushing damp hair from my forehead, “Nicole blind sights me”
Chelsea shrugs, “we all want to watch her run her mascara over the field B, we’d just like to actually be alive to see it happen”
I smile and nod, “you’re right”
I stand to my feet and call for the girls to gather, “I’m sorry guys, this whole thing is supposed to be fun and I let my competition with Nicole get in the way. That’s okay for today and I promise to take it easy from now on”
“But” Tess wraps an arm round my shoulder, “we still fully intend to make a bitch leak, right guys?”
There’re nods of agreement and sighs of relief as the girls disperse and I let Tess drag me to our cabin.
After taking a shower, I change into a denim playsuit, slip on flip flops and sit at the steps to our cabin.
I politely decline when the girls invite me to go swimming in the lake with them, content to listen to Taylor Swift and play online scrabble.
A couple of minutes later, Something bad gets interrupted as someone rudely yanks out an ear bud. “Hey!” I swat Cole as he smirks and takes a seat on the step below mine so we’re almost at the same height.
“Everyone is out having fun and you’re perfectly playing the role of resident loner”
“I am not a loner”
“Sorry, anti-social weirdo” he reiterates with a grin and I smack the back of his head in reply.
“What does that say about you, hanging out with the resident loner?”
He smirks and shrugs, “I like to think of myself as charitable”
