ehalank thanks for editing bro!Michael POV:
Girls have been visiting me for over 3 hours, at least. They all wanted to make sure I was okay. Which would be sweet if they didn't have ulterior motives. All the girls that have visited, so far, have all acted as if I were all that they care about. What they truly mean is that they just want the love of the one who holds the title, hoping to get a title as well. With all these girls coming to "send their wishes", my own family hasn't even been able to see me yet. I sigh, the last girl finally leaving.
A nurse comes into the room once the girl left.
"Your parents are here to see you"
I nod and tell him my thanks.
After a few minutes, I see my parents walk in. My mum's eyes start to glimmer from the tears that were threatening to fall. My father, on the other hand, has a blank expression. He doesn't show his feelings often, he is a ruler and if he is weak the kingdom is as well.
"My baby," My mum runs over to me.
I open my arms and envelop her in a hug. I hear her soft cries as she pulls me further into her embrace.
My mother has always been the kind loving Queen. She fits the cliche persona well. Long wavy blonde hair, baby blue eyes. She is a small woman, but trust me, you don't want to see her when she is angry.
"I am so glad you are ok. I thought- I-" She started crying again. He tears dampening my shoulder.
"It's ok. I am here now." I rubbed her back soothingly.
My father decided that would be the perfect time to clear his throat. My mother pulled back and wiped her eyes. She said her goodbyes and checked over me one last time before leaving.
I looked up at my father. His build the opposites of my mother. His hazel eyes are always hard, and his face emotionless. He has dark brown hair cut short.
I myself am a mixture of them both. My light brown hair is a mixture of my parents, but the rest of my physical appearance comes from my father.
"What changed your mind?"
"About what"
He knew what I meant yet he had the audacity to ask me.
"About crowning me King?"
My father studies me.
"Well, it will be easier on the kingdom, and you will have more time to choose a betrothed"
I think over what he has said, and it makes sense. I nod my head.
"That makes sense."
My father nods his head, as a silent gesture of understanding.
An awkward silence falls over us. Overall these years we barely had any conversations unless it had something to do with my position or the kingdom. We never talked about normal things families would. But I have grown used to it. My father was a strong leader and he needed to focus on the kingdoms wellbeing. Sometimes I wished he would even have a family meal with us. It was always me and my mother. He only really came into my life when i turned 13. I was old enough to learn for my position. Without saying a word, my father takes his leave. I sigh, slumping back down into the comfort of the bed. I feel myself slowly falling into a state of sleep.
Soft knocking intrudes on my much-needed rest. I sit up resting my back against the bedhead.
"Come in," I sigh rubbing my face. All of the stress finally coming back to me.
To my surprise, Lady Jane walks through the door. I think back to what Adam said.
...and Lady Jane got injured trying to protect you...
"Prince Michael" She curtseys slightly. "It is good to see you awake and less pale then you were a few days ago."
Unlike all of the other girls that have visited me, she seems calm and collected, traits that all Queens should have. Except she keeps her distance, as if something is stopping her. Her whole posture demands respect, yet she isn't a noble lady. She is different. To different for my liking.
"Thank you for your concern Lady Jane"
Today she is wearing a mint green dress that flows down to the floor. A small blue bow around her waist. She always seems to be against the trends. It's intriguing.
She nods her head.
"I heard that you tried to help me that night. Is it true?" I sit up further, maintaining eye contact with her.
At this comment she seems nervous. It is an obvious contrast to her usually calm state.
"Yes, that is true," Her voice waivers slightly. She coughs, fiddling with her hair
Her whole posture demands respect, yet she isn't a noble lady. She is different. To different for my liking.
"Thank you, I owe you my life"
"You do not owe me anything, Prince. As you still paid the price, and I was too late." She curtseys slightly. Showing respect, her posture seems less tense now. But she seems to be nervous still.. "I must be going, as you need your rest." She goes to head out.
"Lady Jane!"
She stops instantly, her demeanor changing slightly before she looks calm.
"Yes, Sir?" She still has her back to me.
"If it isn't too much trouble, may I ask why?"
"About what?" She turns, her green eyes finding my brown ones. Eyes that showed her stress and nervousness.
Strange?
"Why put yourself in harm's way? To save me?" I stared at her, silently begging for an honest answer.
"You have a good life here. Everyone loves you, adores you, envies you or hates you for your power" She gestures to me. "Others are less off. They are abused ignored and turned down. But it doesn't matter where you come from, no one deserves to die without it being just."
"Do you believe that whoever tried to kill me was unjust?"
"Not entirely, it's more so of their reasons to kill you." She almost whispered the first part. If I wasn't paying attention, the simple phrase would go unheard
If I thought this girl was different before, she truly is now. I wave my hand, dismissing her. After a curtsey she walks out of the room.
"Adam!!" I yell out, knowing he wouldn't be far.
"Yes" He pants out.
"I don't trust Lady Jane. I need to know who she is and who she associated with."
He nods his head in understanding, obviously too tired to actually speak.
Lady Jane is quite a puzzle. Or a dangerous trick.
