Chapter 16:

The morning rays cast my shadow behind me. Walking back into the city is a death wish. Those of the Queen's guards look surprised to see me here, but they cannot attack me until tomorrow noon, which gives me time to strike. The further I walk into town the more familiar faces I see. The young guard Jorah spots me.ShitI turn around and start walking back into a crowd, trying to avoid him. A hand pulls me back, dragging me by my hood into an alleyway."Do you want to get killed?" Jorah hisses at me, shaking me slightly."Possibly" shrugging out of his hold, he steps back."You should've run while you could" he sighs, disappointment evident on his face."I am dying loyal to the Queens, Jorah," I leaned against a wall, scanning the area making sure no one was listening. "I will strike tonight and die tomorrow, I will make history.""Don't you have anything that you want to do? Have a family, a child to call your own, a life?!" Jorah practically yells at me, the disappointment turning to anger quickly."That is a choice I made years ago. I sacrificed all of that for the future of every little girl. You think I would've known how my choices would affect me," my word now turning to ice. "How if i had a life, i would need to hide this from them. This life-" I stop in my tracks. He is just a kid."Look, Jorah," sighing, I get off the wall, "Just don't make the same mistake I did. You are still young, go find love, go find your life. Okay?"Before he can answer, I've already blended into the crowd once more. Squeezing past people, trying to get out of sight quickly. The morning bustle now a hustle for me, trying to avoid royal guards as well as the queens.Something- more like someone- stops me in my tracks. My form running into them makes us both stumble back."Sorry" mumbling. I walk past them, keeping my head low to avoid eye contact.A lone tear trickles down my cheek, the crowd now thinning out to the houses surrounding the square. My breathing quickens as I hear more footsteps approaching me, I turn down the familiar alleyway at the back of Annie's house. My pace gradually getting faster, I grab the spare key Annie always hides, and I slide into the kitchen which is located at the back of her house.Leaning against the door I hear the footsteps pass, getting softer the further they get. My shoulders slump. It hasn't been two days yet.I get up, walking cautiously through the room."Annie?" I call out, looking for her. "Annie..."My voice trails off, a muffled conversation can be heard from the other side of the door."If you see her can you please tell us immediately" the voices are muffled and I cannot hear a reply?Soon I hear a door close, no more voices can be heard. I slowly open the door that separates the two rooms."Annie?" I whisper out into the room, using the door as a shield."Jane?" she steps into my view.I sigh in relief, before I can speak I am being scolded."You should have left already, what if the Queens find you, what if the scribe tells and you are wanted by the royals and the Queens?" she pulls me into her arms regardless."I am going to fix my mistakes" I murmur into her shoulder, savoring her warmth one last time. She pulls back, looking me in the eyes"What do you mean?"I step out of her grasp, standing up like a soldier."I, Jane, a member of the Queen's movement, will fulfill my duties even in death. A King rules with an iron fist, but Queen's rule with their heart and mind. Kings are seen as strong, and Queens are just kind. But we are more. More than forgotten. Kings may fall, but queens will rise. And when the last King dies, so does their Reign. With the fall of an Empire, a new begins. The Reign of Queens, and may she live. Long live the Queen...."Annie starts to cry, the silent sobs racking through her."No-" her sobs break through the silence. "You can't..."I stop myself from consoling her."I made a promise. I will cut off the loose ends I made before I am cut off." I hold back my own tears. "I will never ask you to kill for me, you are too pure for that. I am sorry, Annie."She collapses to the ground, crying and murmuring to herself.I look down at her, her form shivering as she sobs. Annie was more of a sister than a friend, and it is I that is causing her this pain. I kneel in front of her, my stone expression melting as I hold her."Annie," I whisper quietly. "I don't want you to follow my lead"I pull her back slightly so I can see her face."Please leave this town and live a good, long life," smiling weakly, I get up. "Promise this to me, Annie"I wait for her to say something, even just a simple nod but she just sits there looking down. I sigh."I came to let you know" I turned around and walked back into the market square. I can hear Annie yelling for me to come back. Begging me to stop.People around me start looking towards Annie as she battles the crowds to get to me. A small smile graces my face, probably the last genuine smile I will ever give. I turn into the crowd, easily maneuvering between people walking along with the markets. The closer I get to the Palace the more guards appear. Some wear civilian clothes but their weapons can be easily spotted, others are along rooftops or scanning the alleyways. I pull my hood over my head, casting a shadow on my face as I pass them. Most don't give a second glance in my direction, some even not noticing my advancements towards the gates. I walk past two guards in civilian outfits, keeping my gaze away from them.

A hand grabs my arm, pulling me around to face them. I keep my head low, trying to hide my face in case I get recognized."Lady Jane?" a guard states my name clearly. "Are you lady Jane?"I shake my head unwilling to speak, I keep my head bowed. Before I have time to move, my hood is pulled back. I look up at the man who now clearly recognizes me, I scan my surroundings knowing that I don't have a high chance of escaping."Lady Jane!" The man yells out, signalling the other guards to react.I need timeThere are four more guards walking towards me.

Shit.
