I lay on this dark, cold, hard cement floor. I'm cold, scared, and soon dead. All I have left is Devil, Chuck, and my armor. It's night. I look to my side to see Devil, sitting against the cold wall. I go to him, and wake him from his slumber. I shake him, and I see his eyes open.
Devil: What is it?
Me: Just wanting to talk, it's my last days alive so I figured I might as well make one last friend.
Devil: Listen trooper, I am not going to talk to you, or get to know you. It'll only leave me with pain. It's best for me, for both of us.
I walk over to his side and slouch down. Sitting beside him I look at his gray eyes. They are dull. Almost without a soul.
Me: Ace
Devil: What?
Me: My name is Ace, and if I'm correct I said that when I got here.
Devil: Well sorry Ace
Me: Yeah
After a long minute of silence I look to the shadows and see a sleeping Chuck.
Me: I've never been with him and it be quiet.
Devil: Still isn't
I look at him.
Me: I was always the talker, and he wasn't, but when you start a conversation with him he doesn't shut up.
Devil: I couldn't tell because of the silence
That was sarcasm, and I know it. I go and wake up Chuck and he, like Devil, stirs awake.
Chuck: What's up Ace?
Ace: I'm bored, Devil won't talk
Chuck: He doesn't seem to be that type
I get up and start to walk to Devil. I hear a grunt and soon Chuck is beside me. I continue to walk to Devil. When we get there I sit down next to him, and Chuck sits beside me. I look to Devil, and he speaks.
Devil: Ace, for the last time I don't want to talk
Me: You don't have to
I see him look at me in confusion.
Me: Me and Chuck just want to talk, you don't have to.
He sighs and looks forward.
Me: I never understood people like you, I doubt I ever will
Chuck: Yeah, I'll never understand the whole "Me not talking is better for the both of us" thing.
Me: Me and the guys back at base talk all the time, and it never hurt us
Devil looks at me, and for once he speaks.
Devil: Here if you get to know someone it hurts more to watch them die, and when you don't know them it's easier.
Chuck: So you don't want us to go?
Devil: No, I don't know you so I don't really care.
Me: That makes some sense.
Devil: I got to know someone once, and that's why I don't ever want to do it again.
Me: What was he li-
Devil: It's time to get some sleep, ok. We can talk later.
I know that he said that to avoid the question, and I understand that. I walk to Chuck and he is already asleep. I go to my corner and lay down, and let sleep consume me.
