We make our way to the gun range and while we make our way Chuck speaks up.
Chuck: That was...
Me: Hectic
Chuck: I guess
Blast: Let's just get to that range
We look forward and we spend about 5 minutes walking around the base to get to the range, and we eventually make our way there and it's a very large and open range. It has targets up to 300 meters out! I get the NT-242 that Chuck brought. I hear the other two speak up.
Chuck: You know, we should have a shooting competition. Us three, and we should use that Valken-38X that was brought.
I look at him and stand up.
Blast: that sounds cool
Me: Well you two go, first I'll use the range finder to find a target and watch it
Chuck: Alright
I go to the shooters position and lay prone. I look for a target, and I find one.
Me: Target bearing 097 from the shooters position, and 248 meters out
Chuck: Alright!
He gets the Valken and lays down. He takes a second to find the target. He sees it.
Chuck: Target bearing 097, and 248 meters out?
Me: Affirmative
He takes a second to aim and he fires. I look at the target in the range finder, and I see that he hit half an inch inch up too high and just tow inches left. If he went down half and inch and two inches to the right he would've hit the bullseye. He did say it incorrectly. Here in the 212th we say the bearing, and then dash, and then the meters out. So what he should've said was "Target 097-248?" and I'd reply with "Affirmative" and he'd take the shot. Well anyways he is waiting for me to tell him.
Me: half an inch too high and two inches left
Chuck: Ah, well that's still good
He gets up and Blast lays down next. He grabs the weapon and prepares to fire.
Blast: I'm gonna miss
Me: Target bearing 097, 248 meters out
He does the same as Chuck, and he prepares to fire.
Blast: Target bearing 097, and 248 meters out?
Me: Affirmative
I hear the firing of the weapon, and he hits it in the left shoulder. He gets up and looks at me.
Me: That was off by quite a bit buddy. You hit it's left shoulder. Now where you two aiming at the bullseye?
Chuck: Yes, but it was still off
Blast: I tried but I was too shaky
Me: Alright
I hand the range finder to Chuck, and he looks at the target. I lay down and put my balled up left fist under the butt-stock of the weapon. I aim at the target, and ask the question.
Me: Target 097-248?
He seems to be confused for a second but he gets it.
Chuck: Affirmative
I take note of the 248 meters, and I check the elevation knob and see that it's to 200 meters. Since the target is over 200 meters away, I turn the turret and dial in 300. I speak to Chuck.
Me: How's the breeze today?
Chuck: It's a very light breeze, why?
Me: No reason. You where half an inch to the left, right?
Chuck: Yep
I look at the windage knob and see that it is set to 0. I turn the turret to dial in 1R. I turn the Magnification Adjustment Ring, and it zooms in. I see that I'm aiming a little high so I squeeze my fist. I aim about half and inch left from the center of the bullseye, and fire. It strikes the center of the bullseye. I stand up and look at him, and he lowers the range finder, and looks at me. Wide eyed.
Chuck: Y-You hit it directly in the center...
Me: Yep, I thought that I would. Next time make sure that you check the dials.
Chuck: Is that why you wanted to know how the breeze was, and how far to the left my shot was?!
Me: Yep, and you fell for it!
Blast is laughing his ass off because of the mistake that he made. All of it should be common knowledge, unless you're new, and that's why he didn't check. We spend the rest of the time shooting, and we went back for dinner. Eventually it was lights out, and we had to go. I am walking to my quarters, and I open the door. I step in and lay down on the mattress and sleep consumes me.
