"Oh.. Virginia I didn't realise you'd arrived. Come, lunch is ready" Katy motioned to Virginia smiling stiffly, trying to get over the shock that almost gave her a heart attack.
"Come dear" she urged when Virginia continued to stand at the foot of the stairs, eyes darting between mother and son. Katy smiled, her voice calm yet a turmoil of emotions working up her insides.
She just hoped Virginia didn't hear anything.
She hoped..
If anything, she needed to hear it from her son not from an argument.

Virginia returned the smile, making her way towards them. She pulled a chair back and sat down.
Kevin did same beside her, avoiding eye contact.
Katy disappeared into the kitchen and appeared seconds later with a spatula in hand.

"Mrs Bloom, allow me" Virginia stood up immediately, taking the spatula from her.
"I'll serve. Please sit"

"Thank you" Katy replied, sitting opposite her son.
There was thick tension in the air as Virginia served each person the chicken fried steak.

"Umm..mother, where's dad? I haven't seen him yet" Kevin asked, desperately trying to get rid of the tension.
Katy glared at her son, anger burning in her eyes.
Virginia didn't miss that either, but she chose to keep quiet, concentrating on distributing the sauce to each steak she'd served.

"He's out with a few friends. He must be on his way back" Katy finally replied in a clipped tone.
As if on cue, they heard the glass door sliding open as Patrick made his appearance, shrugging off his coat and dropping it together with his briefcase on the couch before joining them at the table.

"Kevin" he nodded in acknowledge.
"Dad"

"How are you doing Virginia?" he turned to her.
She gave him a small smile.
"I'm doing good Sir"

"I didn't know going out with friends entailed going along with a briefcase and dressing formally" Katy told her husband as she grabbed a plate and served him.
He dug in immediately, biting a chunk of chicken off his fork.

"Sure we went out for a few drinks but it was business related" he replied, swallowing.
Katy sighed, letting the matter rest. No matter how hard she tried, Patrick was still going to continue being a workaholic. He was addicted to it, if that was even possible.

Silence ensued afterwards as everyone ate their meals except for Virginia who kept stealing glances at Kevin.
He wasn't eating. His jaw was set firmly and his lips were pressed tightly in a thin line as he twirled the steak around in his plate absentmindedly.
Reaching out, she rested a hand on his thigh and squeezed gaining his attention. His head snapped in her direction and she gave him a smile, gesturing at his food with her eyes.
He returned the smile and turned, cutting into his meal with a knife before pushing it into his mouth with a fork.

Satisfied, Virginia went back to her food, desperate to finish her meal quickly. There was so much tension she couldn't wait to bolt out of here.

After lunch Kevin practically jumped off his seat and trotted upstairs. Virginia's eyes followed him until he was out of sight. Once he was out of sight, she helped Katy gather the dishes into the kitchen.

"Leave it, the house helps will be back by evening. They'll take care of it"

Virginia nodded and walked out of the kitchen, up the stairs and into Kevin's room. She entered to find him pulling off the shirt he wore and replaced with a blue one, wearing a blazer on top of it.
