[CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX]
—REGULUS ARCTURUS BLACK LIKED TO THINK he knew what he was doing and in a way he did. He knew exactly what he was doing, or he used to know what he was doing. The mysterious new girl had thrown him off his original plans. She wasn't mysterious in the way most are, yet that was exactly what she was. She showed up out of nowhere, claiming she was Odette Lefébvre when the Lefébvre family was all dead. They were all murdered and Regulus could name the exact three death eaters responsible for their deaths.
He had no problem with her, however, he had his own problems and a liar was the least of them. Not to mention, he didn't understand why she'd take the name of a family that was brutally murdered. Regulus didn't want to speak about Odette at all at home, but he had to say some lies in order to decrease the chances of Odette being hunted down. The Lefébvres were not a random family that they chose to kill for fun. Yes, the death eaters were sick, Regulus was not denying anything, but the Lefébvres were killed for a reason. Regulus didn't know why. That was a task discussed to the other death eaters while he was off at school and to be frank, Regulus didn't care.
He did blame her sudden involvement with him on himself a bit. Perhaps it was a bad idea to steal the book she wanted twice, but in his defense, he needed it. He hadn't even realized it was the same girl until she spoke to him.
In the beginning, Regulus couldn't care less about her. She was a girl with secrets and he was a boy with secrets that could hurt others. Yet, he refused to help her at first, because he wasn't cruel. He doubted she knew what she was doing and he didn't think she should involve herself in something she didn't understand. That was important simply because if one gets too deep into old magic, they could venture into dark magic. The two weren't that far from each other.
Regulus was once a foolish young boy that grew up in a home that expected perfection. They would get punished every time they stepped out of line. In the beginning, Regulus had Sirius to stand up for him. However, Regulus was never there to stand up for Sirius and eventually, Regulus didn't need Sirius. He told himself that until fooled himself into believing that. Even when Sirius talked to him one last time before he left the house for good, Regulus didn't care. It didn't hurt. Sirius was just a disgrace to the Black family name. He was nothing more than a blood-traitor, nothing more than the dirt under his shoe.
He was young and all he knew was his familh. They spoke of an ideal world where pureblood wizards were in charge of the world. They spoke of the Dark Lord who's goal was exactly that. Their parents never spoke of joining his ranks, yet they spoke with pride when they brought it up to Regulus at a young age.
Oh, how great it would be!
He wished nothing more than to please his parents and at some point, he believed them. He believed in their ideals and that they were doing the right thing. He dreamed of the day he could join the Dark Lord and then it came.
