Akeela's Pov.
I lower my head and smile up at the moon, the only one who will always believe in me.
I can't help but feel like howlin again. So I tip my head back once again, but just as I was about to howl a gut wrenchin pain goes through my stomach.
Oh no no no, I can't be havin the pups so soon. Them being born early is bad, very very bad.
I slowly walk into Mars's den and lie down on a deer pelt. It's time for the pups to be born.
Holy shit sticks. This hurts. I'm never havin pups again. Never. I bite my lip to stop these awful whimpers from escaping.
Okay, now I gotta push. Push. And out comes the first one. I quickly lick it clean and gently move it towards my stomach.
It latches on almost immediately and then I feel another rip of pain. With another big push out comes another pup.
I lick the pup clean and then I realize my pup ain't breathin. I frown, my pup is dead. I pick my poor pup up and move it as far away from me as I can without having to get up.
This horrible event happens another seven times and by this time I'm tryin not to cry. This is all Ripper's fault, it he hadn't shoved me off the rock my pups wouldn't be dead.
Oh dear sweet baby moon, this gut wrenching pain is still there. With another big push, another pup enters the world.
I lick this pup clean and I smile, it's breathing! I grab the pup and move it to my stomach.
Two outta ten isn't too bad. Ah hell, what am I saying? Two outta ten is pathetic.
I nuzzle the two of them closer to my stomach, then I rest my tail on top of them. "You two should stay warm tonight." I whisper sweetly to them.
I take a deep breath, trying to calm down my heart. My heart is feeling all wacky, first it's all heartbroken and now it's filled with motherly love.
I feel protective of my two babies. If anything or anyone tries to touch my babies, there's gonna be bloodshed.
I lower my head and rest it on the deer pelt, this pelt smells nice. And that's the last thing I think before I fall asleep once again.
Mars's Pov.
"Well son, it's a good thing that she is on our side of the fight now. Because now we have leverage on them." My father grins.
"How so?" What does he mean we have leverage on them? "Thunder's gonna want his pups, so we negotiate to give him the pups then we ambush him and kill him." My father is definitely a tactical thinker.
"But the pups won't be born for awhile yet." "That doesn't matter, we'll still be able to kill him. Even if it's in a long time." Father grins evilly. I nod my head.
"I'm going to go back to my den, goodnight father." I say while turning to go back to my lovely den.
"Don't tell Akeela any of this, we'll tell her once we plan on ambushing him!" Father calls after me. "Okay." I continue to walk home.
The last of the setting sunlight is gone by the time I get close to home. Once I'm close enough to see the entrance of the den by moonlight, I smell death.
Oh no. "Akeela!" I call as I rush into the den. "Shush! They're sleeping!" Akeela growls at me.
I stop and stare at her. She has that look about her. The look that says without her mate to stop her, she'll kill anyone who aggravates her.
I back up a few paces, letting her know that I respect her and I will not harm her or her pups.
She shows her teeth once again and then lays her head on her paws, her eyes watching my every move.
Which is understandable, I mean, she's got no mate to help her protect her young, so her maternal instincts are bumped up to highly protective mode.
As I look at her, I notice what's making the smell of death. Her pups, at least eight of them, dead.
I frown, they'll have to be buried. But I can't bury them with Akeela in highly protective mode.
"Akeela, I have to bury your dead young ones. Is that alright with you?" I calmly ask her. She eyes me, then she nods her head.
So I slowly go forward and grab a deceased pup and then I go outside and bury it.
It kills me to have to bury eight of her pups, but it is what it is. Once I finish burying them, I lay at the front of the den, giving Akeela her space.
"Thank you." Akeela says gruffly. I just smile at her, I have no intention of saying anything.
I lay my head down and rest it on my paws. Something bad is gonna happen soon, I can sense it. But what bad thing is gonna happen?
