I can hear the noise from the party and know that sooner rather than later someone will come looking for us, especially if they had seen Ms Johnson being removed.
I sweep Geneva up into my arms just as Henry appears.
"What happened?" he rushes towards us and I bare my teeth at him.
"Open the door" I growl and he does, allowing us to use the staff link through the back of the bar and towards our conference room, I can feel Geneva's body tense in my arms but she curls into me and that makes my heart race.
Finally in the office I sit down at my desk with her still in my arms, Henry watching me settle before crossing to pour us all drinks, passing me a brandy for Geneva.
"Drink this" I lift the glass to her lips and she takes a sip, choking a little as the alcohol warms her cold body. "More" I press and she takes another sip before pushing it away, her eyes coming up to mine as she shakes her head.
"Alex, I'm alright, I promise, it was just a shock when she hit me" she whisperers, settling back in my hold.
"Who hit you!" Henry raises his voice coming round the desk to kneel at our side, his hand coming up to brush her hair back and expose her bright red cheek. "Who?" he repeats, his eyes coming to mine for answers.
"Grace Johnson, she cornered Geneva about losing her membership, then hit her when I ordered her to leave... its all my fault" I tell him, realising that I had caused the situation to get violent.
"Is she gone?" Henry growls, looking up at us and I nod, holding Geneva tighter to me.
"Alex, too tight" she squeaks and I start, not realising I was hurting her in my need to keep her safe. I move to unwrap my arms to set her down safe, away from me but she stops me, her arms covering mine as she relaxes back against me.
"Do you want to call the police?" Henry asks but Geneva replies quickly.
"No, please can we just let it go" she asks looking up at me pleadingly.
"She attacked you, she shouldn't be allowed to get away with that" Henry reminds her grimly, but she shakes her head, breaking our stare-down to look at him.
"Please, I don't want any fuss" she whispers and we both cave to her request.
"Only if you let us look after you tonight, please come home with us, no expectations but we want to know there are no lasting effects from her attack" Henry counters and I feel her body tense as she thinks about his words, and I brace myself for her rejection.
"Yes, if you let it drop" she groans and I hide my grin in her hair, both relieved and surprised, as Henry jumps to his feet.
"Excellent, right you stay here with Alex while I go and finish up out there, just relax, what do you want me to tell Jayne?" Henry asks and she sighs.
"I've already told Jayne to enjoy the rest of her evening, she's off duty already and I think is with James, I don't want her to know about the attack if she mentions it accidentally to any of my family, they will be out for blood and I don't want that, after all..." she glanced between us both "you two are bad enough"
I tuck my head into her neck and draw in her scent as Henry chuckles. "Be good for Alex, I will be back soon"
As soon as he's gone I return my attention to her. "We need to get some ice on your cheek but I don't want to let you go" I groan and she laughs lightly.
"Alex it's okay, I'm not going anywhere, I promise" she says squeezing my hand as she looks at me.
I lower my head slowly towards her, gently brushing my lips over hers before our foreheads rest together.
"I'm sorry" I whisper and she sighs.
"Alex! Stop please, it's not your fault" she growls and I let out a short laugh.
"It is. I could have, no should have, handled the situation better. It's just when you are involved, my mind seems to be discombobulated" I tell her and she laughs out loud.
I look at her confused "what is it?"
"Oh Alex, only you would use a word like discombobulated" she giggles and I smile with her, thinking of a million other underused words that I could use to make her laugh.
"Is that a compliment?" I ask and she nods shyly, relaxing back against me again. We sit in the quiet, the muffled noises of the club in the background as the evening winds down and I feel her body relaxing more as the stress of the evening wears her out and sleep claims her.
I shift a little to position us in a more comfortable way and lean my head back, smiling to myself as I think about her.
Even before the attack this evening, I had sensed that she had made a decision about us, that she had seemed more relaxed with both our current attention and future intentions.
We had been waiting till the end of the evening before we were going to broach the subject with her, but the attack had changed that, now we would be taking her home with us, thanks to Henrys quick thinking, and there I hoped she could relax with us and would be more open to building on our relationship.
Henry returned an hour later, Geneva's coat and bag with him, and a tense smile on his face, as he looked down at her sleeping in my arms.
"You look worried, what is it?" I asked him carefully, keeping my voice low, so not to disturb her.
"Do you think she will run again?" He mutters and I hate the way his words make me feel, I had deliberately blocked all thoughts of her running, wanting to believe she was giving us a chance.
"God I hope not, but it has to be her choice, if she wants to go, I won't stop her, I'll hate it but I can't force her" I tell him and he nods.
"I know, I just want her to give us a chance and I'll fight for that, even if it means chasing her over and over again" he replies with a sigh.
"You don't need to chase me, I want to see where this leads" she tells us softly, drawing our eyes to her as we both realise she is awake. "I will tell you... I am scared but I don't want to deny my feelings any more, just don't ever lie to me" she asks and we both nods.
"Use your words" she growls playfully and we all laugh.
"Yes Geneva" we reply together, smiling at her.
Henry holds out his hand to her, helping her up off my lap, leaning down to place a gentle kiss on her forehead. "Come on, let's get you home?" He says helping her into her coat, and taking her hand as we head for the exit.
