The next torture session was a few months later. Again, the victim refused to be tortured while a small child was present, but my father ignored him. These sessions only happen a few times a year, but my father made good money off it. Of course, he wasn't the only one who was able to keep the family well fed. My mother was a lawyer for small court cases, which also made a fair amount of money.

My birthday was coming up in a few weeks. Unlike other girls in my neighborhood, I didn't want my birthdays to be a big deal. I wasn't going to wear a big, frilly, pink dress with new, sparkly, silver shoes. It was just going to be me and my closest friends playing together.

My birthday was December 2nd. I never minded the cold weather that always came during that time of the year. In fact, I loved it. The cold, crisp air would cool my lungs as I took it in, and leave me in a puff of visible air. At times the cold air would nip at my skin, but it could always be cured by sitting in front of a fireplace.

That year, my mother arranged a small get-together with my friends and I, as well as her and the parents.

I jumped up and down to get all of the excitement out of me, but it wasn't working. It was only making me more excited.

At long last, there was a knock on the door. I ran to the door and answered it.

I saw my friend, Liana, and her mother.

"Hi Del!" Liana greeted cheerfully.

"Del" was a nickname that my friends called me. It was way shorter and less formal than "Delphinium," so naturally, I loved it.

"Delphinium, where's your mother," Liana's mother asked. I pointed to the kitchen and Liana's mother walked in the direction.

I started to snicker as I closed the door.

"Del, what did you do?" Liana asked while hanging up her scarf and coat.

"Mother isn't in the kitchen," I replied. "She's upstairs."

Liana shook her head at me.

Even though I was harshly disciplined and strictly taught, I loved to cause small mischief just to annoy people, even if it is almost nothing. I found their annoyance entertaining. And frankly, I still do.

There was a knock on the door again. On the other side was Taylor and both of her parents.

"Oh Del! You will absolutely love my present for you!" Taylor exclaimed.

I let them all in and led Taylor and Liana up to my room. Our small footsteps made pitter pattering sounds on the carpet.

We ran into my room giggling.

"So who wants to bet that Jonathan is going to be the last one to arrive?" Taylor asked.

"He's probably writing a very thoughtful card for Del," Liana wriggled her eyebrows.

"Oh, shut up, Liana," I snapped.

"You know that he's in love with you," Taylor smiled. "Do you feel the same way?"

"No," I stated. "We're only six, love shouldn't be a thing."

The girls stopped giggling when My mother opened the door. "Eagan is here," she said, letting the girl run in.

Eagan sat right down on the carpet where we were sitting. "Happy birthday, Del!"

I gave a nice, big smile.

"Okay, so what do you want to do?" I asked the girls.

"Talk about boys," Liana looked up at Taylor who nodded in approval.
