One January afternoon, I went over to Eagan's house to "study." I was excited for the first day of training.
It turns out that Wednesday was Eagan's mother day off since she was home. She was in her uniform and opened the door with a straight face.
"Hi, Mrs. Fisher!" I waved frantically. I stood there waiting for a reply, but all I received was a silent stare. Without saying a word, Kayleigh walked me to their basement.
I took a look around. There were all kinds of equipment. You can tell the Fishers took their job seriously. Eagan was already down in the basement.
"Hey Eagan!" I said happily.
"Hey Del! You ready?" Eagan asked, but I didn't have time to answer.
"Salute!" Kayleigh ordered. Eagan and I copied her, but like the other time, my salute was off.
Kayleigh noticed this. "Hale! When you do the salute, you need to do it right! Your worthless heart is all you have to offer! Do it proudly!"
"Yes Mrs. Fisher!" I saluted.
"What did you call me?!" Kayleigh shouted.
"Yessir!" I shouted as I saluted. My feet were together, my back was straight, and my fist made a pounding sound as it hit my chest.
"Who are you, and where are you from?!" Kayleigh asked me, right up in my face.
I looked confused at her. "Don't you know-"
"Answer me!" Kayleigh demanded.
"I'm Del Hale! From the Hermiha District, sir!" I shouted.
"Ha! You mean you're from the rich people wall?" Kayleigh asked still at a uncomfortably close distance. "How was it like to be born with a silver fucking spoon in your mouth?! You shits can't do anything! Why are you here?"
"To learn how to fight, sir!" I shouted.
"Well your skills aren't needed if they're absolute and utter shit!" Kayleigh shouted. "How about you!?" Kayleigh questioned her own daughter.
I didn't know why she asked the questions. Kayleigh basically knew the answer to all three of those questions. However, if those three questions were going to be asked in the military, that was a different story.
As Eagan was being interrogated by her mother, I thought about the third question. That question will determine the kind of person he or she is. One can either answer that question with a truth or a lie. If the answer is a lie, then he or she only wants to look good. However, if people answer with the truth, they aren't afraid of being judged, but they may sound cocky.
"I am here to serve the king, sir!" Eagan answered.
Whoever would answer with that is either lying, or incredibly naïve. Obviously, Eagan had time to think about what the right answer is.
"The king, eh?! Well you are nothing more than cow shit to the king!" Kayleigh shouted to the face of her own daughter.
But there are no right answers to that question.
"Alright! Drop and give me ten!" Kayleigh shouted.
I didn't know what it meant, but I saw Eagan attempt push-ups. I did the same.
Kayleigh walked back and forth between Eagan and I. "Straight back! Del! What are you doing with your ass so high in the air?! You aren't a camel! Why are your elbows not bending at 90 degrees? These are the weakest push-ups I have ever seen! Where's the sweat?"
Eagan went down one last time before collapsing onto the ground. I glanced at Eagan getting scolded by her mother. I started to hear sobs, which only made Eagan's mother yell at her more. I thought that was harsh, but it was practice military training. This may have been only a fraction of how tough it really is.
