Working For The Enemy: Ending Option 1- Phil Knows

One week Later

It had been a rough week. From losing your job to hospital visits, but nothing was going to be as hard as finishing your conversation with Phil. He had to know why things had happened, why you couldn't see him anymore. He had agreed to met you at one of your usually spots, a little park you had discovered on one of your "dates".

You weren't sure how to start the conversation, considering the ended, so you just jumped right in. "Before the accident I started to tell you something."

"I remember. You said, 'I'm not who you think I am.'"

"Yes, about that..."

"If this is about your former job, I already know."

Stunned, you stared at him, unable to fully comprehend what he was saying. "You know?"

He smiled a little, "Do you really think I wouldn't run a little research on a woman I like?"

Did he say like? As in still likes? Pushing the thought aside, you continued, "If you knew who I was, why didn't you say something? Why didn't you stop me?"

He shrugged, "Your boss wanted something from SHIELD, we wanted something from him. So, we sent our own agent in."

"Who?"

"Me."

That single word stung. You were trying to get back at SHIELD for the damage they had done, you had fallen for the enemy and now they had turned the tables on you. Was anything going to go your way?

"Y/N. I'm sorry about what happened. About... the mission."

So, he really had done his research. Your father, who had dedicated his life to SHIELD, had lost it due to a failed mission. You resented the organization for not being able to protect him. They had written it off as an act of duty, a life for their country. All those years you had been angry, and now you felt... defeated. As if you hadn't been able to get justice.

"I didn't know your father, but I've heard nothing but good things."

"What?" Again, you were stunned. You had never heard anything other than that SHIELD had discarded the memory. Had you been lied to?

"He was one of the best agents we had. He helped to build many of the programs we have in place. Losing him was a great loss to our organization, if we could have saved him, we would have."

Tears started to sting your eyes, you weren't sure what to believe anymore. First SHIELD was the bad guy, now they were praising your father and the work he had done. "I don't know what the truth is, Phil. All I know is that my mission was to distract you. My goal was to destroy what took my father from me. I failed that mission. I didn't think that I would...would...."

"Fall in love?"

Tears slipped from your eyes as you glanced at Phil. Did he really just say those words? Was he taunting you now? You weren't sure of anything at the moment. Had your old bosses lied to you? Was SHIELD the good guy?

"I've worked with SHIELD for many years Y/N, I've made mistakes, I've failed missions. What's important is how we take those failures and learn from them. I know you're hurt, confused, questioning all you've been told." He took a step towards you, slowly holding out his hand. "You don't have to question us. Everything I said to you, I meant... with the exception of maybe the first week. " He shrugged, "To be fair, I didn't really know you then, you were just a job."

You had to smile a little at that, he always managed to make you smile.

"I don't know how you feel Y/N, but I do know how I feel. The past five months have given me some of the happiest memories and if you feel the same, I would like to continue that."

Heart pounding in your chest, you weren't sure what to say. Did he really feel that way?

"It's strange to me, especially given the circumstances." He took another step towards you and you tentatively took his hand, "I love you Y/N and I don't want to lose you."

You still weren't sure what the truth was, but you did know one thing. You loved Phil Coulson and even if this was a mistake, it was one worth taking. Smiling, you gripped his hand with assurance, "I love you too, Phil."
