One week Later

It had been a rough week. From losing your job to hospital visits, but nothing was going to be as hard as finishing your conversation with Phil. He had to know why things had happened, why you couldn't see him anymore. He had agreed to met you at one of your usually spots, a little park you had discovered on one of your "dates".

You weren't sure how to start the conversation, considering the ended, so you just jumped right in. "Before the accident I started to tell you something."

"I remember. You said, 'I'm not who you think I am.'"

"Yes, about that..."

_____

Her statement hit like a bullet. Was it true? Could he really believe something so incriminating? There was no way the enemy could just sneak it without them seeing it.

"How?"

"A complete identity rebuild. Remove any red flag that may catch SHIELD's eye. Simple but complicated, time consuming I'm told."

For 5 months she had played them... had played him. Was any of it real? "Why now? You've kept your cover for months, so why say something now?"

"I... I couldn't do it anymore. I couldn't hurt you."

He was angry. "Why are you even here (Y/N)? Why did they send you?"

"When I took this job, my intention was revenge based. I wanted to break the company, to tear it down for all the trouble it brought my life. But after I met you... after spending time with you... I didn't want that anymore. I couldn't bring myself to hurting you or letting someone else do it."

As much as he wanted to believe her, to believe that what he felt for her was real, he couldn't. He was hurt, angry, betrayed. He wanted nothing to do with her. "You need to leave (Y/N). Now."

_____

Telling Phil the truth had hurt, but it was the right thing to do.

"You need to leave (Y/N). Now."

His words stung, more than anything you had felt before. You had done the worst thing an agent could have done, fell for the enemy, made him fall for you and now had to break both your hearts. Had you honestly thought this would have a happy ending? "Phillip, I never meant to hurt you." Taking a step forward you tried to reach out in an attempt to comfort him.

"I said leave." He was getting angry, you could see it forming. "I don't ever want to see you again."

"Phillip-"

"This is the only chance you will have at getting a head start. I strongly suggest you take it."

You understood. This was possibly the last time you would ever see Agent Coulson. Heartbroken, tears threatening to form, you took a deep breath. This was all part of the job, a hazard you didn't plan for but had somehow happened. Pulling yourself together as best as possible, you nodded and quickly walked away.
