Billy Black watched as the pack gathered around him with the imprints and other elders. Weary brown eyes eyed Bella Swan, he had not wanted her here, but Old Quill insisted she be here. He claimed the Spirits wished her to hear the legends, that she somehow was connected to the Pititchu Wisatsu'upat. Billy wanted to doubt this, but Old Quill was sure and he was never wrong. So Bella Swan was allowed here not only to hear the Legend of the Cold Ones, but of the great Pititchu Wisatsu'upat. To see if she knew something they didn't.
"Come. It is time to listen. Some of you have never heard these tales before and some... never should have, but the Spirits call us all together tonight. Normally we only tell the new comers the story of Taha's wolf shift during their first meeting. However," Billy turned his gaze to Old Quill, "Tonight we change things. Tonight you will hear not only the story of Taha, but the story of the Pititchu Wisatsu'upat, the Moon Woman. In order to fully understand Taha's story we must hear this story. So... let us begin..."
"Many years ago, our tribe was gifted with great magic. Warriors of our tribe had the power to leave their body behind and become spirits. They were forced to flee their lands due to war with the Maka and Hoh tribes. Kaheleha, the first Spirit Warrior and chief, had a beautiful daughter named Catori. In the night as the warriors slept, Hoh men snuck onto their ships and stole Catori away. During the war, the Hoh chief had laid eyes on her beauty and wished her to be his wife. That night, beneath the moon he tried to take Catori as his own. Catori cried out to the Spirits beneath the moon light and the Spirits answered her call. They gave her great power, greater than the spirit warriors, and she flung herself from her body. Standing above her body she howled like a great wolf and the wolves of our lands answered her. They killed the Hoh Chief and his men, their howls reaching across the sea to Kaheleha. the spirit warriors came to protect the wolves as they battled for Catori. Great winds blew, the dogs that belonged to the enemy tribes turned on their masters, bats from the caves circled in the sky. The Maka and Hoh fled in fear of our magic. Our people returned to their land and Catori was named, Pititchu Wisatsu'upat, the Moon Woman. Catori became our tribe's greatest protector. She lived many years, unaging, until it was believed that our people were safe. She married a spirit warrior and together they gave up becoming spirits and had eight sons and two daughters. When Catori passed on it was believed that the Moon Woman was no more."
"However, years later, in the time of Chief Taha Aki, the power of the Moon Woman would return in our people's time of need. Taha was a wise man and known for bringing peace. He forged a treaty with the Maka and Hoh tribes, bringing an end to the hatred. However, one spirit warrior known as Utlapa disagreed. He wished to destroy the Maka and Hoh and build an empire. When the spirit warriors were gone from their bodies their minds were connected. Taha heard Utlapa's thoughts and banned him from the tribe. Utlapa hid in the woods in anger and waited for a chance to get revenge on Taha. One day, Taha left the village and went to a sacred place. The place where Catori first gained her power all those years before. There he left his body and walked. Utlapa gained a foul idea and left his body. Taha sensed him and knew of his plans. But he was to late. Utlapa took Taha's body and killed his own. He returned to the village and lived Taha's life. He took a second and third wife, forbid spirit warriors from walking, and wished to break the treaty. Many were confused, but only one took action. Aponi, Taha's youngest daughter sensed something foul in her father's body. She fled one night and went to the sacred ground of Catori. There she discovered the body of Utlapa and knew something horrible had happened. Unknowing to her, Utlapa knew she was up to something and had followed her. Once she knew that something was wrong he attacked her. Aponi cried out as her father's hands, controlled by Utlapa, wrapped themselves around her throat. Looking up she saw the moon and prayed. In her last moment of life she left her body and became the Moon Woman. Utlapa knew not of her spirit and left believing her dead. When she departed her body a great flash of light filled the sky, but only the creatures of the forest and Taha saw it. Taha ran as fast as he could through the trees followed by a great wolf. Together they came to find the spirit of Aponi sobbing by her body. Taha became angry and swore to avenge her, but Aponi wished only to save her father and people from Utlapa's evil. She begged the wolf to stand by her father's side. Toegther Taha and the wolf became one and went to kill Utlapa. The villagers feared this wolf and tried to kill it, but the warriors stopped them when they heard the voice of Aponi on the wind as she sang the songs of their people, the wolf howling along. An old spirit warrior named Yut disobeyed Utlapa's order and let his spirit walk. He saw the spirit of Taha and Aponi and knew of Utlapa's evil. When he returned to his body he was to weak to fight off Utlapa who slaughtered him. Aponi screamed out in her grief and the wolf gave up his form to Taha completely. The warriors watched in awe as the great wolf took the form of a man. The form of Taha's spirit self. Taha killed Utlapa and returned to his place as Chief. Aponi took the body of Yut and lived in peace alongside her people, until Yut's body died and she joined Yut on the other side."
"Our people now knew that the power of the Moon Woman came to them when great evil threatened the tribe. So as time passed Taha fathered many sons, those sons given the gift to become great wolves and they protected the tribe. Years flew by and Taha gave up his shifting to age alongside his third wife, his imprint. And yet again darkness came for our people. Women of the Hoh and Maka tribes began to vanish and they called upon the warriors. One day, two Maka women vanished and three warriors went on the hunt for them. They stumbled across a strange sweet scent and found a foul creature. This creature looked like a man, but he was inhumanly beautiful and shimmered in the sunlight. Our warriors attacked but they did not understand his true strength. Only one warrior returned and brought with him the stone like pieces of a corpse. His teeth had torn the creature to pieces. Though it kept trying to reform. Only fire could kill the beast. The elders feared that the creature was not alone... and they were right. She came like a hurricane. Killing our people showing mercy only the children, making their deaths quick. She killed every warrior but Taha who was old and weak. As she sought to destroy every last member of our tribe one woman stood firm. The third wife of Taha, cried out and the spirits of Catori and Aponi answered her. As Taha shifted and fought the cold woman, she knew he was losing. The third wife held no powers and no gifts beside one... courage. She plunged a blade into her belly and the spirits of the Moon Women made a great wind to carry the scent of her blood. The scent distracted the cold woman and gave Taha the chance to end her. Taha rushed to his wife's side as she lay dying and he screamed to the spirits. He felt the gentle hand of his lost daughter and knew. Taha helped his people rebuild and then fled into the woods as a wolf, never to return."
Billy stopped and looked around the fire at the pack and Bella. They were staring at him intently itching to hear more.
"Our enemies have all vanished but one. Our blood calling out and we take the forms of the great wolves when they are close. Since the time of Taha, our tribe has only had small packs of two or three, but now our pack grows and grows. More wolves shifting as the Cold Ones come. We sense the coming of great danger and the spirits warn us. Darkness is coming and with it we fear that we may go to war again. We have not entered such dangerous times since Taha and it is whispered that the Moon Woman will return again in our time of need." Old Quill finished for Billy and eyed Bella.
Bella looked down at her feet deep in thought and wondered why she felt so strange about the story of the Moon Woman. She chewed her lip and jumped slightly as she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket, "Excuse me." she muttered and moved away to answer the call.
"Hello?"
"Heya, Izzie." the voice of Natasha filled her ears and Bella felt something inside her stir. Something in her telling her that whatever bothered her about this story... that whatever it was... Natasha was involved.
