Greer was walking by Hudson and his basketball buddies when she heard him say, "Yeah. I know. Having a baby right now would be so hard, but some people are made for it I guess. I don't know that I am, but..."
She walked away quickly before she could hear anymore. She thought they had gotten somewhere, but here she was hearing him say that he wasn't sure if he could be a dad. In the last month, he had acted as if he was all in, no matter what decision she made. She knew she needed someone else on her side. She couldn't take care of a baby all by herself. She didn't want that for her baby, either. She wanted what was the very best for him or her.
Greer was crying as she made her way past Clara. Clara left her group and caught her arm. She asked, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah. I'm okay. I'm just having one of my moments. I'm going to head to the house. I'll see you later. I think I just need a nap."
Clara had gotten home and she was going to Greer's room to see if she wanted to go shopping the next day. When she got to Greer's door she saw that it was cracked open. What she saw next broke her heart just a little bit more. She saw Greer holding her stomach and sniffling as she said, "I'm sorry baby that I am not a better mom. I wish I could give you everything you need, but I can't by myself. You deserve such a better life than what I can offer you. You need a mom and dad who love you. I will tell you that I couldn't love anyone more than I love you. It kills me to think that I am going to have to give you to someone else to take care of, but your daddy doesn't want a baby. You need a mommy and daddy who will love you with their whole hearts. A family that can offer you stability and love. I loved your dad. If I'm being honest with you, I still do. I just want him to be happy and I don't know if the two of us are what he needs to be happy right now. I'm going to do everything that I can to make sure that you are loved and cared for more than you know. I wish I was the one that would be naming you, but that is the job of the people that get to take care of you for your whole life. But if I had my way you would either be Presley Kate or Pheonix Scott." Greer continued to lay on her side rubbing comforting circles on her stomach.
As soon as Hudson got home Clara grabbed him and asked, "Did you tell Greer that you didn't want to have the baby again? I thought you were trying to show her that you were changing and that she could trust you."
He said, "No. Why?"
"I went to her room to ask her if she wanted to go shopping and she was lying on her bed crying. She was holding her stomach and talking to the baby. She was talking about giving the baby up. I thought she was past that. She has baby names, but she doesn't want the baby to feel like they are not loved enough or cared for enough."
"I don't know where this came from."
"She was crying at school today. Then she came back here."
"Oh no. Oh no!"
"What?"
"She must have heard me talking to the guys."
"What did you say?"
"I was telling them about the baby. I told them that some people were made to be parents, but I wasn't sure if I was."
"Hudson!"
"But then I said, that I was going to try to do my best for Greer and the baby. She must not have heard everything I said. If she just heard the first part then that would have sounded like I didn't want the baby, but that isn't what I meant at all. I'll get the guys to tell her that that isn't what I said. I can't let her give the baby up. I really can't image being without the baby now. I always wonder now who the baby is going to look like and who he or she may act like."
"You have to tell her that! She sounded like she was ready to start seriously looking into adoption. I'm pretty sure that would break her."
"It would break me. I can't have a baby out there and not know if they are being cared for or loved. I can't go on without knowing this baby. As crazy as it is, I can't wait to meet this baby. I'm going to suck at being a dad, but I'm going to do my very best to be the best that I can for that baby."
"Then I think you need to talk to your baby's mama."
"I think you are right. Thank you for telling me. I appreciate it."
"I may be mean, but I am looking forward to meeting my little niece or nephew. I can't wait to spoil them rotten. This baby just might be what all of we need right now to bring us back together."
Hudson smiled. "You are going to be the best auntie. I'm so glad things are changing."
Hudson went upstairs to talk to Greer. When he got to her room he saw that she was asleep on her bed. He wasn't about to interrupt her sleep. He knew how hard it had been for her to get good rest lately. He would talk to her as soon as he could the next day. He wanted to make sure he told her that it was a misunderstanding and he now couldn't wait to meet their baby.
