It had come to be the day of Greer's baby shower. She was thankful, but at the the same time not looking forward to it. The girls at school were still not her biggest fan. She knew that any that came were just coming to be on Clara's good side. Her mother had not spoken to her since she was kicked out of the house. Hudson's family was all invited and she knew she was just going to look like a gold digging harlot. She just couldn't wait for the day to be over. Then she just had one more month before she finally got to hold and meet her baby. The baby was due the week after graduation. It was going to be a big month.
Greer was sitting on her bed looking at the corner of the room that they had made for the baby. She started crying.
Hudson came in and sat next to her. He asked, "G, what is wrong?"
"I don't know. I'm tired. I'm lonely. I'm just feeling like a failure. I've ruined so many people's lives. Everyone hates me."
He pulled her into his arms. "That is not true. I know it's been hard, but we are going to have our perfect girl in a month. Then we get to have all of the fun of teaching her and taking care of her. I know it is going to be hard, but we've got this. You are not in this alone. I am going to be right there for all of it."
"What is going to happen when you meet some blonde bombshell at college. Then Presley will take a backseat to her. You'll get married and she won't matter. This is my chance at happiness is her. No one is ever going to want me with the extra baggage."
"Oh, G. That is not true. Presley is number one. She always will be. Everything is going to work out the way it is supposed to."
"I never thought I would be in this position. My parents hate me. I always thought my mom would be sitting next to me at my baby shower and would be excited to help me. Instead I am living in someone else's home, sponging off of them and hoping that I can take care of her."
Hudson kissed her head and said, "We are going to figure this out. I'm sorry that your parents were not more understanding, but never think that you are not cared for or loved. You are so important to me, G. I don't know what I would do without you. I hated the years that we didn't talk. I'm so glad that we are on speaking terms and I look forward to co-parenting with you. I know you aren't looking forward to the shower, but please try to have fun. I'll help you put things away later."
"Thank you for helping me through this mood swing."
"Any time. Just a month more. We're in the home stretch, G."
Greer was sitting in front of everyone opening presents. They had gotten so many nice things for the baby. Grace and Ethan had taken care of the other big things that they hadn't bought on spring break. The girls from school had gotten together and got a stroller along with some clothes and grooming items. Hudson's extended family had gotten them a ton of diapers, the diaper bag she was obsessed with and a baby carrier.
She was on the last gift when the door opened. She was shocked to see her mother. Greer got up with the help of Clara. Clara and Grace went with her as a sheild as they knew Hudson would have wanted them to do.
Her mother handed her a bag and said, "I just wanted to bring this to you. I can't stay."
Greer opened it and automatically tears started falling. Inside the bag was the blanket her grandmother had crocheted for her, some of her dresses that she had worn early in her life and her stuffed animal that she had taken with her everywhere until she was 13, but she never would have told anyone that it was that long.
Greer sniffled, "Thank you. I appreciate it. Presley is going to love them."
"A girl. I hope she doesn't get pregnant as a teenager." And with that her mother turned around and walked out the door.
Greer gasped and began sobbing. Clara wrapped her arms around her and said, "Don't listen to her. Presley is going to be perfect and happy. You and Hudson are going to be great parents. I know she wasn't planned, but there is a reason why she is coming into our lives. I'm so glad she has brought you back into my life. I just hope that I am the fun aunt that she loves and she doesn't know me as the mean one I was before she got here."
As if he knew he was needed, Hudson came walking through the door. As soon as he saw the state that Greer was in he rushed to her side. Clara transfered her into his arms and Hudson asked, "What is wrong?"
Greer couldn't get the words out. Clara told him, "Her mom came over and brought some of her old things for when she was a baby then left."
"Oh, G. It's okay. I'm so glad that Presley is going to have things from when you were a baby. That is going to be so special to her. I just want you to know that you are never alone. I know things have been difficult with your family, but Presley is so lucky to have you as a mom. She is going to be your little best friend and I'm already jealous about it."
Greer sniffled. "Thank you. I'm sorry I broke down like that."
"It's okay. You have a lot going on. I'm going to go up to my room. You try to have some fun with the rest of your shower. I'll come help put things where they need to go when everything is over."
"I'm so glad you are around. I can't wait to see you with Presley when she gets here. She is going to be a daddy's girl for sure."
Grace asked, "Are you ready to get back to the party? You still have a couple of presents to open. I wanted to save my present for last."
"You have already done so much."
"This is my granddaughter. I'm supposed to spoil her. I can't wait to finally get to hold her. It's been a long nine months waiting for her."
"You are telling me. I never imagined I could love someone as much as I already love her and I haven't even met her yet. I just hope that I don't ever make Presley feel the way my parents have made me feel. I never want her to feel like she has to be perfect for me."
"You are going to be a great mom. No need to worry about that. Now open my present."
Greer opened the present to see an old teddy bear, a blanket and a new stylish hospital gown and matching receiving blanket and onesie. Greer said, "It is all so perfect."
Grace told her, "The teddy bear was Hudson's when he was little. The blanket was a blanket that my mother made for me as a baby that we have passed down through the years. Then the gown was just too cute to pass up and it is never too early for to have mother/daughter matching outfits. I couldn't pass up the cute rose that matches the theme of her nursery."
"Thank you so much. I'm sure she will love everything."
Greer told everyone, "Thank you so much for everything everyone. Presley is a very lucky little girl to have so many people that love and care about her already. I appreciate it."
All of the woman stuck around for just a little while longer before leaving. Hudson came downstairs just as he had promised and the two of them along with Clara, Grace and Ethan put everything away in the nursery. They were another step closer to welcoming Presley into their home.
