Chapter 15 ➵ I'm just like you(corrected)
Two weeks later, Spoon called the two new partners for a mission. James and Alyssa hadn't exchanged a word since their little spat the last time.
As she saw him in the distance, she noticed a dark glint in his eyes. He had a blank stare as if nothing around him seemed natural. Mike was somehow trying to bring James back to his usual self: cheerful, optimistic, funny.
'Hey, Aly!' Mike called her. Hearing her name, she took a deep breath and put on her best fake smile:
'Mickey!' She happily greeted him.
They hugged each other while James looked on in amazement:
'You two know each other?'
'We started working at the same time.' she cleared her throat.
'Alyssa, aren't you like 22?' James nervously laughed.
'24.' She quickly answered.
'And you've been working for Spoon at 14? Ten years ago, like Mike?' He giggled.
'What's your point?' Aly clenched her jaw.
'I don't have any. It's just. Weird.' He insisted.
'Hum well, can we go now. Spoon is waiting for us.' Alyssa said.
'Yeah, I don't wanna lose my job.' James agreed. 'With her by your sides, you never will.' Mike laughed.
The blondie gave him a blow of elbow in the ribs.
'What?' James claimed.
'He's kidding. Come on, let's go, now.'
They walked to the elevator, surrounded by a heavy silence, knocked on the door.Sean opened it and smiled. James, unable to fake it, went to the white leather couch in front of the Boss while Alyssa saluted her ex-partner.
'What's the mission?' James precipitately asked.
'Bell, Jonshon's not here yet.'
'Jonshon!' James called, 'stop being hit on by the whole world and come now.
'I'm here. Relax, man!' she replied.
Spoon gave James a killer look as the young woman sat next to her partner.
'So Da... Sir, what's the mission?''I hope your suitcases are ready?' he asked with an impatient smile stuck on his tanned face.
'Why?' Alyssa demanded.
'You and James are coming to New York.' The boss announced. He put out of his pocket a black button, he pressed it and a 4D map of the Four Seasons appeared between the three secret agents.
'On Thursday, January 28th, there will be the Annual Delux Gala. Everyone will wear a mask. I've chosen your outfits, one of our most experimented agents will be there, she will wear this outfit...' he slipped his finger.
A beautiful black satin dress with a white border and a grey mask with sliver details surfaced.
'I've printed this on your mission sleeve. The agent will give one of you a classic briefcase with stolen documents and weapon plans. We will use these plans and documents to put some pressure on Colorado and...'
'Why don't we use it to put pressure on the Other Side?' Alyssa interrupted the older man.
'Because they're silent for more than one and a half years. Colorado is a more important problem. So we have to shut them down.' Spoon explained. 'Well, you just have to pick up the documents, and one of you will monitor for the other side agent, who'll try to get in the gala and steal the documents.'
'Who does what?' James asked.
'You'll decide. I have to see how your team works.' Dan said.
'When is it?' Alyssa added.
'He told us on January 28th.' James sighed, getting up from the couch.
They shook hands, and the two partners left the office.
They went back to the restaurant and sat in front of the counter.
'You're back already?' Mike surprisingly asked.
'Yeah.' James replied, grabbing his old glass. Mike's phone buzzed, which was never a good thing.
'James, can you close the restaurant. I really need to go, and Josh's on a mission.' He demanded, panicked.
'Sure, call me if you need.'
'I will. Thanks, bro!' He screamed, grabbing his black jacket and starting to run out of the restaurant. James took the keys.
'James, we should talk, don't you think?'
'I've nothing to say... do you?' He replied, without any emotions going through his voice.
'Yeah. Listen, I know we can't talk about ourselves, but if we want our duo to work, we gotta trust each other.' Aly seriously said.
'That's right.'
'I know how you feel now. You feel abandoned. You don't want anyone to blame Zayn because you don't wanna think it's his fault.'
'Because it's not.' James objected.
'Maybe... but what I'm trying to tell you is that if you still hoping every day, you will be even more hurt.'
'Why would you care? We're not friends.'
'Yes, we didn't have the best start, that's true. But, James, we're going to be working together for a long time. I'm the best person to know how it feels to lose your best friends. In those conditions.'
'What happened, if I may ask?'
'The girl I've grown up with disappeared one day, without saying anything. Maybe she's still alive, and maybe she's not. The thing is that it's been eight years now, and she's never going to come back. I don't want you to suffer as much as I had.' She admitted, holding James' wrist.
'Why'd you care?' He repeated, thinking about all the moments he passed with Zayn by his side.
'We're in the same boat, and I am not letting you sink.' she pressed his wrist, holding back the tears she hadn't flowed in years.
