Chapter 46 Unconscious
Selena and James parked their car in front of the entrance of the club. They ran towards the two big white doors.
'Derek!' James loudly called a security guy. 'It's a fifty-four emergency.' James threw him the keys, the old bouncer, then remembered the last fifty-four code he had: almost eleven years ago.
Derek grabbed the key and ran to the car, while Selena and James entered the club.
Spoon quickly walked down the stairs.
'Where are they?' He asked.
'We... we can't localize 'em...' James declared, out of breath.
'What?'
'There... Hum, we...' Selena hardly explained; she was panicked.
'Okay, Come to my office. There's no reason to panic, alright?' Spoon calmly said. The two agents followed the boss.
Spoon pressed his earphone and said:
'Derek, I want you to call Jeremy: everything has to look normal. We gotta keep calm.'
'Not again...' Selena whispered.
'What?' James asked.
'I... 'As her vision became more and more blurred, the young woman saw the images of her holding her father's hand eleven years ago. He told her everything was going to be okay,
It was a fifty-four, her first fifty-four: two agent gone missing.
The music in the club and the noise of the agents' agitation melted in her ears. Her heart and lungs tightened.
'Not again.' his consciousness repeated itself. Her head became heavier and heavier, the sound was louder and louder, and her legs more and more feverish. She felt as if she had fallen, plunged into darkness all too familiar. James' voice screamed, it sounded like he was thousands of miles away, yet he was close.
'Not again...' her consciousness repeated itself a second time.
Her head hit the red carpet on the floor and, she saw nothing more.'Come on, Aly, hold on!' Zayn said.
He put her on the left seat, grabbed the handle of a box over her head, pulled it out and, an oxygen mask unfolded in front of her face.
He placed it over her mouth and nose and put a helmet on her ears.
The young man turned the engine on; the plane rolled high speed for a few miles. With all his strength, Zayn pulled the yoke towards his chest; and the plane slowly took off the ground.
He couldn't think properly, should they go to the bunker? Or to the hospital? Did someone notice there was a problem?A red light began to flash next to the unconscious young woman. A beep sounded throughout the plane.
'God damn it!' He screamed, punching the yoke. He turned the automatic pilot on and stood up.
He stretched out his girlfriend's seat and read the red message: 'Mask damaged.'
She was almost not breathing.
He didn't know what to do. He grabbed her wrist and checked her pulse: it was getting weaker and weaker.
'Fuck it!' He knew that it was better to act than to strain. Moreover, he could not watch the one that made his heart beat die slowly.
He pulled out a white trap door and plugged her into a machine that measured the beats of her heart. He put a bandage around her skull, which was still bleeding. Zayn took another oxygen mask and inserted it into an air bomb. The amount of oxygen in her blood increased. He felt relieved. He held her small hand:
'It's going to be okay. I'm not leaving you behind.''Excuse me?' James called a nurse.
'Yeah?' She turned towards him.
'How's she?'
'It's complicated.' The nurse said.
'What do you mean?' He panicked.
'I can't tell you unless you're a member of her family.'
'I'm her... brother. I'm her brother.' He sighed. 'Please, I need to know. I've been waiting for hours...'
'Take a seat.'James sat softly on the blue plastic hospital seats, imagining the worst things that were going through his mind.
'We did the necessary exams, and everything is fine; it's not her fall that put her in a coma.' She started.
'Then what is it?' James asked as he tried not to freak out.
'The doctor thinks that she put herself in a coma after an emotional shock so violent that her body did not handle the circumstance very well. Do you have any idea what might have happened?'
'Please can I see her?' He avoided her question. The nurse opened her mouth, ready to protest.
'I'm beggin' ya.' He insisted.
His dark eyes started to water; he couldn't lose her, nor Zayn or Aly. They were his family. The nurse nodded; he walked towards the closed door and took a moment to open it.
As he saw her, he felt his heartbreaking. Only machines enabled her to live; she was unconscious.
'Leena? It's James. We're in the hospital because you collapsed.' He stopped himself a minute.
'Hum... The doctor said that you put yourself in this coma; after an emotional shock. I don't even know what this shock can be! It could be because of Aly and Zayn, or because of the fight or the pressure you must feel overwhelmed by, but I need you to keep being brave and strong; you can do it.' James grabbed her tiny hand and whispered.
'I cannot lose the three of you. Please, stay with me.'
He closed his eyes to stop seeing her like that: unconscious.
'James?' A low voice whispered.
James gently opened his eyes to see if he had been dreaming.
She was smiling: 'How long have you been staying there?'
'From the start.' He replied.
'Thank you...' She said, caressing his cheek.'Selena?' James called her.
'Yeah?'
'Why did you put yourself in a coma?'
'I didn't do this on purpose!' She lied.
'Selena, please. I've stayed here for seven days 24/7, don't try to fool me.'
'Telling you would be worse!' James' phone suddenly ringed, thus preventing Selena from telling James the whole truth...'Hello?' He picked up the call.
'James?'
'Zayn, where the fuck have you been? It's been a week!' Jee shouted, torn between a feeling of relief and anger.
'We... We're in trouble, man. I...'
'What's happening?' James asked.
'I think I'm losing Alyssa...' The Pakistani's voice cracked.
He let his phone slip through his fingers.
'James, what the hell is going on?! Selena asked. The door opened,
