chapter 11.

this will not make sense if you do not read the last chapter.

------------------------------------------------------

"Gimli!" Legolas forced a croak out of his throat. However selfish it was, Legolas did feel slightly disappointed it wasn't Aragorn. But it was almost just as good. It was Gimli.

The dwarf handed him his familiar bag, and some water. "This is some Lembas we found in your small bag." The elf quickly bit a piece off, his stomach seemed fulfilled already, and he could feel a strength that wasn't there before.

"Who is 'we'?" Legolas asked.

"The owner of this farm, who kindly offered us help, and a place for you to rest undisturbed, this very cave."
"How did you find me?"

"You were very lucky, I was on my way to this town to get my old pony, Daisy, back, but I felt like returning to the side of the stream, where you, me, Aragorn and occasionally the hobbits used to go. For old times sake. You were just lying there, bleeding, dying, I took you on the back on the pony and we came across this farm."

" Thank you." Legolas owed his life to this dwarf, his best friend. "How long was I unconscious?"

" A few weeks." Gimli shrugged.

Aragorn probably thought he was dead.

" But don't go anywhere, you rest here with that nasty wound of yours, we have tried to cure it..." A flash of worry crossed his face, before continuing, " Do not worry you are safe, we have informed Rivendell where you've been, and trust me many elves have been searching."

Legolas tried to give Gimli a smile, that was the least he could do, but the most at the moment. He was safe. He didn't die alone in a forest. Once he got back to Rivendell, he could heal his wound with Lord Elrond's help, and see Aragorn today. But Arwen would be there too. Aragorn has probably forgotten all about his disappearance, his beloved wife is finally with him.

Throughout the next few days, Gimli or the farmer came in to change his bandage. Gimli spent most of the days talking to him, and although Legolas couldn't respond back, it made him smile hearing Gimli talk nonsense again.

"... and so then I told the dwarf, well what do you-"

There was a knock on the door. That was unusual, usually the farmer just walked in, (it was his farm after all).

Legolas's back straightened, painfully. Gimli stumbled over and opened the door.

"Well look who it is!" A familiar smile grew on the dwarfs face. "We call some elves but we get the King of Gondor himself!"

Legolas's heart stopped.

 He froze.

He heard a familiar chuckle, a chuckle that had haunted him for years, and especially these last few days in the cave.

"Yes it is me, dear Gimli"

Gimli laughed wholeheartedly, exactly like a dwarf should.

"Here is the pointy-eared patient."

Gimli moved away from the door and Legolas saw Aragorn's face for the first time in a two months. Legolas noticed a few more worry lines etched in the mans face.

"I shall leave you alone, while I get your stuff back laddie." Gimli smiled, knowingly, and left, humming a cheerful tune.

Aragorn spoke first. "Legolas what has happened?" He paused. " You look terrible."

This old joke would have made Legolas smile, but he didn't have the strength to.

Aragorn repeated it, " What has happened?" His eyes were filled with pain, and Legolas hated himself for the pain he had caused him.
