The Cuthberts were your second family, or really your first. You lived with your brother Gilbert and ever since your father died you had been helping Gilbert with the farm and the housework. You didn't mind the work, but there was so much of it and you had been working all morning. It was a Saturday, so you mostly had the whole day to yourself.
After you milked the cows, gathered the eggs from the chicken, and picked some apples for Marilla you headed inside the house. It was almost lunchtime so you decided to go to Anne's. You put some apples in the basket and hopped on your horse. Soon enough, you had arrived at Anne's house. You knocked on the door and got no response, you assumed no one was home.
You walked towards the barn and heard rustling, you assumed it was Jerry. Thankfully your assumption was correct.
"Bonjour Jerry." You said, slightly waving.
"Bonjour Y/n" He responded nervously.
"Would you like some help with that?" You asked.
Jerry seemed surprised, but handed you a rake.
He picked up a wheelbarrow and carted it across the barn. You began to whistle along with him and danced around the barn. He grabbed your hand and started to dance with you, you both secretly liked eachother but never said anything. It was in this moment that both of you felt a connection, he leaned in and kissed you. At first it surprised you, but then you kissed him back.
When you broke apart you continued dancing and whistling. He spun you around the barn and was in love with the sound of your laughter. Several minutes had passed and neither of you realized that Anne, Josie, Diana, and Ruby were standing at the barn entrance staring at the both of you. Anne stood there with her arms crossed a slight smirk plastered on her face. Both you and Jerry's faces went bright red from embarassment.
Diana seemed jealous, but it didn't matter to either of you, until it did. A few moments later when it looked like she was on the verge of tears, you felt bad. You felt as if you would lose one of your best friends, you wondered who you should choose. Jerry shot you a comforting gaze and squeezed your hand. You loved this boy more than anything in the world, you knew in an instant he was the one for you.
"Hi there y/n. What are you doing here?" Anne cheekily asked.
"Well I picked some apples earlier and I wanted to bring them to Marilla, but no one was home." You explained.
Anne nodded.
"I heard some noises in the barn and I wasn't quite sure what they were so I came to check. When I walked in, I saw Jerry. Matthew was nowhere in sight and I thought I should help him, since he was doing the work all on his own." You finished.
Before Anne could say anything, Josie decided to comment.
"Help? You wanted to help him do his job? Work in this barn? That is very unladylike, a lady should never do that." She mocked, making you lower your head in embarassment.
"I told you we should have never let her sit with us at lunch." Josie whispered, but just loud enough to hear.
"Well its only because she's a Blythe. " Ruby responded.
"Excuse me, but that is quite rude. Y/n was so generous to help me today and if I might add, your behavior is very unladylike." Jerry said, speaking up.
You gave his hand a slight squeeze as you heard Josie scoff and walk away.
"We'll be inside if you'd like to come in Y/n." Anne offered before walking away with the rest of the girls.
You tried to contain your tears so that you could avoid the embarassment. You quickly wiped off your face, grabbed your basket and began to ran out of the barn. Jerry ran after you, grabbing your hand and pulling you into a hug.
"Thank you for standing up for me Jerry, that was very sweet of you." You said quietly.
"I will always stand up for you." He replied.
