I woke up this morning to the sun shining on my face and the birds chirping loudly. It took a few moments to realize that today was my birthday. I got out of bed cheerfully before going to my wardrobe to pick out the perfect outfit for today. Having my birthday on a weekend made me so excited! I had plans to meet Anne, Diana, and Cole for lunch by the schoolhouse, which was something we did for each of our birthdays. Once I changed out of my sleepwear, I rushed downstairs to see my parents in the kitchen making breakfast.
"Happy Birthday!" My parents exclaimed.
I ran over and hugged both of them. My mother had made a beautiful cake and my father handed me my birthday present. I tore at the paper, my skin crawling with curiosity as to what could be inside. I saw a collection of books that I had been wanting for quite some time.
"Thank you so much!" I cheered.
My parents laughed at my excitement as we enjoyed the cake my mother made. I placed the new book collection in my basket so I could show Diana and Anne. My mother had placed the leftover cake in my basket, telling me to take it to the picnic. I thanked her before running out the door. I began my walk, taking in the sights and sounds of Avonlea.
When I arrived at the meeting place, I noticed that neither of my friends were there. I figured that maybe I was early, so I sat down and read one of my books, hoping they were on their way. After a few chapters into the book, I began to worry that they had forgotten my birthday. I shed a few tears before beginning to pack up the contents of my basket.
"Y/n?" I heard a voice call, I quickly turned around to see Charlie Sloan.
"Oh, hello Charlie!" I exclaimed, eagerly wiping my face to try to remove the tear stains.
"Are you alright? Are you crying?" He said as he walked closer to me.
"Of course not, everything is perfectly fine!" I reasoned, trying to sway him from asking me more.
"I know when someone's been crying, y/n." He said, sighing.
"It's silly and it's nothing to worry about, Charlie. I'm fine." I pleaded.
"Tell me what's wrong." He said, rather sternly.
"I came here to meet Anne, Diana, and Cole for my birthday and it seems they've forgotten," I replied honestly.
"Happy Birthday!" He exclaimed.
"Thank you, Charlie," I replied.
"Would you like to go for a walk?" He asked shyly.
"I would love to," I told him.
We started our walk, just talking about school lessons. I had noticed that we were walking towards his house. I hadn't noticed how far the walk was from the schoolhouse, the sun was beginning to set.
"Oh my! Charlie, it's getting so late. My parents will be so angry if I'm not home soon." I cried.
"Why don't you just come in for dinner and I can walk you home after?" He suggested.
"I suppose that would be alright." I agreed.
When we arrived at the door he held it open for me. I couldn't believe what I saw.
"Suprise!" My classmates shouted.
I laughed and ran over to Anne and Diana.
"I thought you had forgotten about my birthday but you planned a whole party!" I said.
"First, we would never forget about your birthday and second, we aren't the ones who planned the party." Diana stated.
Anne giggled and pointed to Charlie who was deep in conversation with Gilbert.
I turned my head to see the boys laughing, when I turned back around Diana and Anne were still giggling. I blushed as the two girls pushed me over to Charlie. Gilbert smiled at me and nudged Charlie who seemed surprise.
"Charlie? Can I speak to you for a moment?" I asked.
"I'll be right back Gilbert." He told his friend.
Gilbert shot him a wink before Charlie guided me to an area that was much quieter.
"Anne and Diana told me that you planned this party," I informed him, blushing.
"They did?" He stuttered.
"Yes and I wanted to say thank you. This is the nicest thing anyone has done for me." I told him, kissing his cheek and walking away nervously.
Before I could walk away, he grabbed my wrist pulling me closer to him. He pecked my lips quickly before releasing my hand from his. I smiled before walking to my friends.
I walked over towards Gilbert, Anne, Diana, and Cole. Gilbert had his hands in his pockets with a signature smirk, Anne was talking about how "positively romantic" I was being, and Diana was whispering something in Cole's ear.
"Have fun over there?" Gilbert joked to Charlie who I didn't even notice was behind me.
"Shut up," Charlie said, slapping Gilbert's arm.
Anne, Diana, and Cole whisked me away to discuss tonight's events. I turned to Charlie and waved. He smiled and waved back.
