(A/n: This one is based on a scene from my favorite Christmas movie, "It's a Wonderful Life". )
My family has been friends with the Andrews family for as long as I could remember. Every year, after the lakes freeze over and the snow falls, we go ice sledding. It has been a tradition forever and I look forward to it every year. I have always had a crush on Billy Andrews, but Today is my birthday and we're going sledding! I put my boots and dress and ran down the stairs to meet my parents. We got into our carriage and rode to the Andrews' home. When we arrived I ran to the front door. I saw Jane in the window. She came running to the front door and it burst open.
"Y/n! Happy Birthday!" She said, pulling me inside.
"Thank you Jane!" I replied, hugging her.
"We got you some gifts, would you like to open them?" She inquired.
"You didn't have to get me anything, but I'd love to open them," I responded.
"Prissy! Billy! Come in here!" She shouted.
It was a matter of seconds before I heard footsteps racing down the stairs. Prissy came running into the room.
"Oh happy birthday!" She squealed.
Jane and Prissy pulled me onto the couch and placed boxes in my lap.
"Open mine first!" Jane insisted.
I opened the box to find a beautiful new bonnet.
"It's lovely. Thank you, Jane." I commented, hugging her.
"Mine is next," Prissy noted, placing a rather large box in my lap.
I opened the box gently to see a new dress.
"Prissy, it's gorgeous." I gushed.
"There should be one from me there too." I heard Billy's voice pipe in.
He was standing against the doorway with his arms crossed and a big smile across his face.
Prissy handed me a small, long, and rectangular box.
I gently lifted off the cover and gasped.
"Billy, this is too much." I gushed.
"It will look beautiful on you. I promise." He replied, walking over to me.
He placed the beautiful necklace around my neck.
"I told you it would look good." He joked.
"Children, it's time to go!" I heard my mother shout.
We all ran to put our jackets on and we headed for the ice. After a few rides down the ice, Jane was taking another turn. She slid down a little too far and fell into a rushing stream.
"Jane!" I screamed, running towards her.
Billy ran past me, jumping in to save his sister. He dove under and picked her up, bringing both of them to the solid ground.
"Jane, are you alright?" I asked, covering her with some blankets we brought. She gave a slight nod, getting up and walking over to our parents to explain what had happened.
"Oh Billy, that was so heroic. You must be freezing." I said.
He didn't respond.
"Billy?" I persisted.
Still no response.
"Billy Andrews!" I shouted.
He looked over at me and finally responded.
"Did you say something?" He asked.
"I've been trying to get your attention for a while now. Can you hear alright?" I asked.
"Maybe it's just some water in my ears." He responded.
Shaking his head for some water to come out of his ears, I saw some water fly out.
"Is that better?" I asked.
"I can hear alright on my right side, but not on my left." He explained.
We decided to end the trip there for the day and head back to our house. My father called the doctor to examine Billy and Jane. Jane had a slight fever, but the doctor said it would pass. He was taking a long look at Billy's left ear. I hoped everything was alright. After a long pause, the doctor stood up.
"It seems the poor boy has gone deaf in his left ear." He diagnosed before walking out.
My parents decided it would be best to leave the family to themselves and we went home. I couldn't stop thinking about Billy.
The next day I walked into the sweet shop that Billy works at.
"Hey N/n, do you want the usual?" He asked, a smile growing on his face.
"Chocolate please." I ordered.
He took a dish and filled it with a few scoops of chocolate ice cream.
"Coconut?" He inquired.
"I don't like coconut very much." I replied.
"Just try it, you'll love it." He said, bending down to get the coconut.
As he bent down, I leaned over the counter.
"Is this the ear you can't hear from?" I whispered.
No reply.
"I'll love you until the day I die, Billy Andrews." I whispered.
