I awoke to the sound of birds chirping loudly outside my window, I hurried out of my bed and got dressed. After finishing off my hairstyle with a bow, I made my way to the kitchen where I was greeted by my little brother and sister. They were happily chomping away at their breakfast. Emily and Jack are twins, today is their 4th birthday.

As I took a bite of my egg, my mother spoke up.

"Darlings, I am so sorry but I must go to Charlottetown tonight to meet your father."

"But what about our birthday?" Emily asked, voice quivering.

I looked at my mother's face and she looked so guilty. Looking back at me, it seemed as if she wanted me to say something.

"I'll make sure we have a wonderful night, I promise lots of fun." I said, taking her small hand in mine.

"Alright, will you pick us up from Grandma's house?" Jack asked.

"I'll be there." I promised.

I decided to go on a  walk to come up with some ideas for the twins' "party". As I was leaving my house, I noticed Gilbert walking towards me. He had a large box in one hand and a book in the other. I watched his hair fall in front of his face as he closed the book and straightened out his jacket.

"Good morning Gil." I said, grabbing his attention.

"Good morning to you too, y/n." He said with a smile.

"What's in the box?" I inquired.

"Just something for the twins from me, Bash, and Mary." He replied, handing me the box.

I sighed as I accepted it.

"Is something wrong?" He asked as we began our walk to no particular destination.

"My mother is going to Charlottetown tonight and I promised them I would do something fun with them. The problem is that I'm not quite sure what to do." I admitted.

"I'd be happy to come and spend time with you all and I'm sure that Mary would make a cake if I asked." He replied.

"Gilbert, I couldn't ask you to do that." I said.

"I'd love to help you, really. The fair opens today, we can bring them there during the day and then bring them back home." He suggested.

"You're brilliant, I completely forgot that the fair opened today." I said.

"Are you hungry? I'd be happy to make us some lunch. I must go home and change before I pick up the twins." I told him.

"No, but thank you for offering. I will go and change at home and I can meet you at your grandmother's house." He replied.

"See you there," I said.

He smiled and began his walk back home. I ran as quickly as I could back to the house to change. It seemed silly to be nervous about spending time with Gilbert,  but I couldn't help it. As soon as I got home, I took a basket and put some nice clothes in it for the twins. I then ran up to my room and put on my favorite lavender and white dress with a lavender ribbon.

Taking the basket in my hands, I began my walk to my grandmother's house. As I approached I saw a figure pacing back and forth in front of the door. Gilbert was there, looking handsome as ever. I ran up the stairs and apologized for my tardiness.

"I'm terribly sorry for making you wait."

He turned to me quickly, saying nothing. He just looked at me for a moment before he responded.

"It was no problem, I haven't been waiting long." He said.

I nodded before knocking on the door. My grandma answered with a smile plastered across her face. She let us in and I went upstairs to help the twins change. After they changed, they went running towards the stairs.

"Gilbert!" Emily yelled wiht excitement.

He kneeled down and opened his arms to her, hugging her.

"Are you coming with us today?" Jack asked.

"I think I am, y/n invited me." He mentioned.

"Can we go now?" Emily asked impatiently, holding Gilbert's hand. I held Jack in my arms as we walked to the fair. I enjoyed watching him spend time with Emily, it was sweet.

As soon as we got to the fair, they wanted to play some games. Gilbert won Emily a stuffed bear and she was so excited. Jack wanted to dance so I took him out to the lawn where he could dance to the music.

"Jack, do you think I could dance with y/n? It's about a birthday surprise." He said. Jack nodded enthusiastically and ran off towards Emily. They were still in my sight as I danced with Gilbert.

"I have to admit, there is no birthday surprise. I just wanted to dance with you." He admitted.

"I'm glad you wanted to." I said, smiling.

After a few seconds, Emily and Jack came rushing over claiming they were tired. The walk home was quiet and peaceful. I had Jack on my back and Emily insisted on being carried on Gilbert's back. I felt Gilbert's hand brush against mine briefly. He looked at me, blushing.

When we got home, we brought the twins to their room. Gilbert left to make tea as I got them dressed and ready for bed. After they had their sleepwear on, they got in bed. Gilbert and I kissed them softly on the head. Just as I was about to leave, I took one last look at them.

"I love you y/n. This was a good birthday." Emily whispered.

"I love you too Em." I replied, walking over to her and brushing the hair from her face. I looked over and heard Jack's soft snores.

"Goodnight sweet girl." I told Emily.

"Goodnight." She whispered before closing her eyes.

I softly closed the door before turning to Gilbert.

"How can I thank you enough for all of your help today?"  I said as we walked to the kitchen for our tea.

"There's no need to thank me. I had fun, really." He said.

"Gilbert, we forgot to give them the cake." I said, looking at the perfect cake on the table.

It was quiet for a moment before we laughed. We drank our tea and ate cake before entering the living room.

"You're so good with them, the twins." Gilbert said, out of nowhere.

"Thank you, I love them so much." I told him.

"I can tell, you'll be a great mother some day." He added quietly.

"I've never thought about that." I whispered.

"Thought about what?" He inquired.

"Being married and being a mother." I replied honestly.

"You'll be a great wife and a great mother. Want to know how I know?" He asked.

"How?" I countered, tilting my head in confusion.

He leaned in to kiss me quickly.

"I don't think I understand, can you tell me again?" I asked with a smirk.

He kissed me one more time before parting.

"Do you want to know what else I know?" He asked, pulling me closer to him.

Before I could respond, I heard footsteps.

"Y/n? Can I cuddle with you and Gilbert? I can't sleep." Emily asked.

I nodded before she climbed up and laid across us. I rested my head on Gilbert's shoulder. He kissed it softly before saying,

"We are the best babysitters to have ever existed."
