Chapter 19

I looked in the mirror and frowned at my reflection. I was wearing many layers of mascara and had a tight black dress with purple lace gloves. My lipstick was a dark red and my boots were black leather.

"It looks great on you." She smiled.

"It doesn't feel great." I said. "It's not really my style."

"You'll get used to it." She said and I shrugged.

We payed for the dress and a few others before we left the shop in the dark part of Magix. I watched mothers hold their children's hands tightly as they passed us, walking as fast as they could to the light side of Magix. I glanced down the street and watched girls from Alfea laughing and hugging. They seemed so happy. So ignorant.

"Lilly." Selena called. "You coming?"

I took one last look at the happy students. "Yeah. Let's go."

We walked down the streets and through an alley. Many witches were hanging about in the alley, watching us intently. One girl stopped us.

"Your fee." She said and held out her hand.

"Oh please, " Selena scoffed. "You can't expect people to give you money at this fake toll, Tori."

"I guess we'll have to fight this out then." Tori said.

"New meat huh?" Tori raised an eyebrow at me. "Would be a shame if she got hurt."

Selena glared at Tori and some other witches started to get closer. I looked around, predicting the outcome of the fight. I knew we wouldn't win.

"Stop!" I shouted and took my necklace off. I put the locket in my purse and held the chain up.

"A chain?" Tori laughed and other girls joined in.

"Watch." I said and pressed the chain in my hands. I opened my hands and showed them the solid gold chain.

"How did you do that?" Tori gasped

"Magic." I said and tossed it to her. "Now let us pass."

They backed up and we went through.

"How did you do that?" Selena asked.

"I will never tell that secret to anyone." I told her. "That is the reason I had to abandon my old life."

We reached the end of the alley, to be greeted by a brick wall.

"We'll I just gave her gold for nothing." I sighed.

Selena chuckled and pressed her hand to the wall. She whispered an incantation and the wall let us through. It opened and a restaurant was visible.

"Why have the wall?" I asked.

"To keep fairies and others out." She told me. "Even if they knew the incantation, the wall would not separate."

"Only six fairies have ever seen past the wall." She told me as we walked toward the building.

"Who?" I asked and we stepped inside.

"The winx." She said and every witch in the room looked up.

"Oh." I said and tried to hide behind my long hair.

We sat down at a booth in the back. The menu was written in a language that I could not understand so I asked Selena to tell me what was good.

"The human stomach is good." She said. "It comes with eyeballs."

"What?!" I coughed, nearly puking.

"I'm just kidding. Get the cheese fries." She advised and I let out a breath.

"So tell me about your old life." Selena said, once our food had arrived.

"You don't want to hear about my life as a fairy." I sighed.

"Yeah I do." She said. "So why'd you run away? I mean, I assume that your family hasn't died."

"They haven't." I told her. "I was banished."

"Banished?" She said. "Banished from your planet?"

"Yes." I breathed.

"Wow. What did you do?" She asked. "Only very few people have ever been banished. Did you kill anyone?"

"Kill someone?" I gasped. "Of course not! Let's just say that I committed a crime against the royal family."

"Cool." She smiled but I was not amused.

"I miss my family." I said and she sighed.

"We all do." She said and I looked at her. "None of us see our families that often. Most of us were kicked out of our homes or kingdoms. My parents left me when I was a baby. I grew up on Earth but when I found out I was a witch, I came here and never went back."

"I like Earth." I said. "Nobody can tell you who you are because you already know who you are. You are strong and powerful and one of a kind. And nobody knows that but you and it's just a good feeling."

"I didn't know that when I lived there." She explained. "I was bullied and had no friends. Not that much has changed, I still have no friends."

I smiled and took her hand.

"Now you do."
