Chapter 6
"Hey, hey what's wrong?" He stood there in shock for a few seconds as Charlie clung to him while crying and muttering incoherent things about it being all her fault, something about a baby and something about someone hating her. He was trying to put it all together, but she wasn't making any sense to him. Tears were wetting the front of his shirt as he gently ran his hand up and down her back. Confused and trying to work out after a week of ignoring his calls why she was here, now crying.
"Hey Charlie, calm down and tell me what's wrong?" He pulled her away from his body and cupped her face into his hands as tears ran down her face. Her eyes were red from tears and the tip of her nose was red from rubbing it or blowing her nose.
"It's all my fault." She sniffled as she started to become incoherent again, so he just held her and gently stroked her hair trying to get her to calm down.
"Chase, who is at the door?" His father said from inside. He felt Charlie stiffen up and back away from him rubbing her hands over her eyes.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know you had anyone over I'll just go." She went to leave while still crying and Chase grabbed her hand and gave it a squeeze.
"It's only my Dad. Come in. I wouldn't be much of a friend if I let you leave while you are still upset." Chase watched as she nodded her head and took a step inside as he closed the door. He watched as she looked down at the floor with hunched shoulders, dressed in a tracksuit despite the warm weather outside. Her shoulders were still shaking, and he watched as she wrapped her arms around the middle of her body like she was protecting herself as she sniffled again.
"We are watching the soccer. Have you eaten anything yet?" He asked and watched as she shook her head. Something was wrong and when she looked up into his eyes with glassy eyes filled with tears, he wanted nothing more than to hug her close and never let go.
"Can I go lie down?" She asked in such a small and quiet voice as she started to cry again.
"Of course." He knew he should probably lead her to the spare bedroom but he took her to his room and watched as she jumped into his bed and pulled the covers up to her chin. He sat on the end of the bed and they both stared at each other neither one of them saying anything.
"I'll be downstairs if you need anything." Chase was torn between staying with Charlie and going downstairs where his father was. He watched as she nodded her head and he lingered for a few more moments before he went down to watch the soccer with his dad.
"Was that Charlie?" His Dad questioned once he sat down with another beer. He didn't bother to ask how his father knew it was Charlie because the busy body most likely got up to see who was at his door crying.
"Yeah. She went to go lie down. Don't look at me like that Dad. She was crying, and I wasn't going to turn her away." His dad still gave him a look which he sighed at and slumped into his chair and took a long sip of his cool beer and the soccer kicked off.
