Chapter 10

Chase let Charlie cry on his shoulder as he gently rubbed her back in soothing circles. Her small body shook, and he felt like crying himself when he could feel her ribs poking through her back beneath her clothes. He wouldn't say so was anorexic, but she was too thin, and he made a vow to himself to take Charlie out at least twice a week for food and not leave until she ate everything.

She wasn't crying for long as her body stopped shaking from tears and soon; she was taking deep steady breaths showing that she had gone to sleep. Not want to move her from his lap he continued to rub soothing circles into her back. He wasn't sure how long he sat there before he heard the door opening to the room. He glanced over his should and saw the housemaid come in and stop when she saw them. She was an older woman with fair skin and dark hair that was greying and had a soft Irish accent.

"Sorry to intrude, but I came to see if Miss Charlotte needed anything?" Chase looked down at Charlotte and shook his head and watched as Rose came in collected the glasses and passed him the tv remote.

"I will let you know when dinner is ready." Chase watched as she lingered in the room for a little longer before leaving, which left Chase to think about who she worked for Charlie or the Prick. Chase put on the tv and turned down the volume to a soft whisper in the room as he watched A-league game that was playing on the screen. He finished his glass of wine when he felt Charlie stir in his arms.

"What time is it?" She whispered groggily as she moved around in his lap.

"It's around 5ish." He watched as she sat up and blinked a few times looking around the room.

"How long was I asleep for?" She shuffled off his lap and sat down next to him rubbing the back of her neck.

"Not long." He watched as she sighed and saw she still looked tired. "Why don't you get more sleep. Your housemaid came in and said she would get us when dinner is ready." Charlie nodded her head and surprised Chase when she rested her head on his lap and lied down. Chase looked down at her and couldn't help himself but gently run his fingers through her hair.

It was like he was constantly drawn to her and whenever they were close; he had to be touching her. He was sure this wasn't normal, but he didn't care, and Charlie didn't seem to mind either.

"It's nice having someone around," Charlie whispered to him sometime later and it confirmed his suspicion that the Prick was never home. Chase just hummed because if he spoke, he would defiantly voice his opinion on what he thought about her fiancé. He wanted to demand she leave him and be with him, but he couldn't.

He couldn't do that because it was Charlie's choice and while he knew it would be hard to see her marry another man who didn't deserve her, he would still be there to support her in any way possible, even if it made him look the bad guy to everyone else.
