Chapter 13

Warning this chapter contains some heavy stuff

Chase had missed Charlie these last 2 weeks. While he had been busy with the Q&A night which was a hit, he missed her company. He had only seen her a handful of times and it seemed her fiancé was always around. When he spoke to her, she sounded happy but there was still a sadness to her voice that made him again wonder why she was still with him. He was hoping to see Charlie later today but when he rang earlier and she said she was busy; he tried not to sigh disappointedly.

It was just after lunch and Chase was getting ready to head to his parents for Sunday late lunch when his phone rang.

"Chase, can you please come and get me," Charlie said on the other end and Chase immediately stopped what he was doing when he heard her sad and broken voice like she had been crying.

"Charlie what wrong? Are you okay?" He rushed out in a panic as he quickly put on his shoes and was rushing to get his car.

"I'm fine can you just come and get me." Chase opened his car and rested his phone on his ear as he slid into his car.

"Sure where are you?" He questioned still anxious about Charlie. She was meant to be going out with Landon and now she was calling him to pick her up. There was silence on the other end of the phone and he could hear cars passing through the phone. He waited in his car for another minute and was worried when Charlie still hadn't replied.

"Charlie?" He questioned as his gut tightened when there was still no reply.

"Sorry I was trying to work out where I was. I'll send you the address." Her small and timid voice said on the other line and his phone pinged showing a message. He started his car and waited for the Bluetooth to connect.

"Okay, I got the address. I'll be there in about 15 minutes." He pulled out of his driveway and hung up after saying bye to Charlie. He quickly rang his Mother saying he would be late and she just told him to drive safely.

By the time he pulled up on the curb where Charlie was his stomach felt in knots. He was worried about Charlie and when he saw her standing on the sidewalk smoking a cigarette, he knew he was right. He parked the car and got out and walked over to Charlie who was puffing away.

"Hey, you all right?" He placed his hand on her shoulder and watched as she jumped and turned around.   He watched as her eyes became dilated in what he would describe fear as she hunched her shoulders to make herself smaller and placed a hand on her chest. He frowned at her reaction and watched as her breathing increase.

"Charlie?" He questioned and watched as she shivered and watched the moment a mask went over her face to hide her reaction.

"Sorry, you gave me a fright." He watched as she put her smoke to her lips and drew in a long breath.  He watched as she dropped her half-finished smoke to the fall and put it out with her shoe while she turned her face away and blew out the smoke before picking up the bud and putting it in the bin next to her.
