Chapter 9

When Charlotte opened her eyes, the first thing she noticed was Chase was staring down at her. The second thing she noticed was that she was also staring up at the ceiling. She looked to her left and saw table legs telling her she was still at the restaurant where Landon just left.

"Charlie?" She sat up slowly and looked around to see a waiter with a glass of water and most of the restaurant looking at her. She bent for head down so her shoulder-length hair would hide her shame of fainting in an expensive restaurant.

"Charlie, you okay?" Chase said with a worried look on his face as he helped her stand up.

"Just take me home." Her voice was shaky as she ran a hand down her face not caring if she ruined the perfect face she had composed.

Chase led her to his sports car with a gentle hand on her back and helped her get in.

"Can we stop at a servo?" She asked because more than anything she needed cigarettes. She didn't care if Landon found them because her world was falling apart at the moment and she just didn't care about the consequences.

"Of course, we can." They both sat in silence and soon they were pulling into the closet servo. Charlotte quickly went inside bought herself some smokes and a lighter and lit one up as she walked to the car. She could feel Chase watching her and she didn't care. She didn't want to smoke in his car so she took a few puffs hoping to calm her nerves just enough to get her home in one piece. not caring about the wasted cigarette, she crushed it under her foot before she slid back into the car.

"You smoke?" Chase questioned her as they started driving back to her house.

"Yeah, did you want one?" She asked remembering back in university he used to smoke, and she hated that he did.

"No, I quit years ago. I don't ever remember you smoking. If I remember you said you hated them and would never ever touch them." She avoided his look.

"Yeah well, things change." She snapped at him even though she didn't mean too. Her stress was through the roof, she felt sick to her stomach as she thought of all the ways Landon would punish her. However, what really weighed heavy on her mind was just how much did Landon know. She knew this was another game of his. To leave her thinking and waiting. She hated it and he did it often enough to constantly keep her stressed and anxious in this waiting game.

Chase didn't say anything for the rest of the trip and instead of dropping her off at the gate in front of her house he drove all the way in. She should have told him not too but what was the point. She opened up her passenger door and got out her key and noticed that Landon's car was gone. She didn't bother saying goodbye to Chase as she opened her front door and walked inside straight to the cabinet where the liquor was held. She heard the front door shut and she glanced over her shoulder to see that Chase had followed her inside.
