Chapter 4
Pacing back and forth in her bedroom Charlotte was rung out with nerves. She should have never agreed to dinner with Chase tonight. It was a mistake, and every time she looked at her phone to cancel and say it was a mistake, she couldn't. Her finger hovered over the call button, but she could never bring herself to dial.
Sighing, she placed the phone on her bed and her fingers through her hair. She was meeting Chase at his place at 5 pm, meaning she still had 3 hours until she had to leave. She sat on the end of her bed and rested her face in her hands as she remembered his face when she agreed. Their heads had been so close all she had to do was lean in closer, and their lips would be touching. She knew she shouldn't want to, but she wanted to kiss Chase. Sighing again, she laid back on the bed and threw an arm over her face.
She didn't think her feelings for Chase would be so strong. She thought with time, the love and passion she felt were fading, but clearly, she was wrong. Time and distance had done nothing for what she was feeling, and when she compared Chase to Landon, he didn't even come closer to fulfilling her the way Chase did. She knew she was in trouble, and she knew after tonight, she couldn't see Chase again because it was too risky for him and her.
Landon was a powerful man. He ran the largest shipping company in the world that had its fingers in many illegal businesses. She tried to stay out of his work, but on more than one occasion, she had met with some shady people because she was in the penthouse apartment in London.
Most people didn't know about the illegal business and knew Landon for the face he portrayed to the public. A wealthy businessman who owned over 80% of the ports in the world. A man you wouldn't want to cross because he could ruin your life by simply not allowing you to import or export goods.
Sitting on her bed, she searched for Rose, who was cleaning an extra bedroom. She heard Rose come in and do some cleaning, so she closed her eyes and pretended to sleep. She didn't stay long and when Charlotte. "Rose, you aren't not needed for tonight. Landon will be back late, If not at all, and I am visiting an old friend for dinner." Rose said nothing as she nodded and went back to folding over the bedsheet.
"I'll just finish my duties; then I will see myself out." Charlotte smiled at her before exiting the room and going downstairs. She poured herself a scotch and connected her phone through the Bluetooth speaker. She played soothing music as she sat on the island bench and drank her drink. She knew she probably shouldn't drink so much, but it calmed her nerves.
She slowly sipped on her drink and wondered what Chase was up to. Was he thinking about her the way she felt about him? Was he getting ready for her arrival? Or was he simply strolling through the house, waiting for time to pass? She felt her phone vibrate and saw that Landon had messaged her, saying he wouldn't be home until after midnight. She knew she should message him telling him she was going out, but what was the point. She would be home by midnight, anyway. She replied , knowing it would be another night she would go to bed alone.
