"Where were you?"

Her mother asked when she came closer to her on the gates of the Merrythought Manor.

It was the morning of her birthday, with still her deer pyjamas on, broom in hand, no shoes on and with her new small dragon hiding under her hair. All the people staying at the Black house came to drop her off at her house. They were all, surprisingly, inside a car just a few meters away from the gate waiting for her to enter to her house safe and sound.

"I was out for a walk" she answered with a hard tone.

"And the broom?"

"Practicing for when I can finally fly away from this awful place" Hazel tested with a smirk on her face.

Her mother's range was plastered on her face, the woman grabbed Hazel by the arm ready to hit her but it was soon stopped when her uncle, Astral, rushed to the both woman and gripped Hazel by the waist.

"I have a surprise for you" He said walking away from her mother towards the house.

She turned one last time watching her mother's hard eyes and the blue car parked outside of the house.

"Happy birthday, Azie"

Surprisingly, Astral did give her a present.

"A journal?" Hazel asked as she cluelessly held the thing in her hands. It even looked like it belonged in the 1800's.

"You can write down your thoughts if you are ever feeling alone"

Hazel stared at him with uncertainty, "why would I write down how I'm feeling"

Astral groaned in annoyance, "just do it" he couldn't believe she was so stubborn even with a birthday present.

She opened the journal expecting blank pages in it, but this wasn't the case. Half of the them wer already filled with words. Initials scripted on the first page; R.A.B

"I guess...um—thanks?"

"You say thank you. 'Thanks' is a term used in between filthy Mudbloods and Muggles" suddenly Hazel heard her mother come in the room. Her regal posture and style of clothing would almost fool anybody into thinking she was part of the Muggle royalty.

Hazel backed away a little, she gripped the journal to her chest as fear grew in her veins. For the first time in all the summer she actually faced her mother and the horrifying thought of what could happen scared her to death.

She could even dare say her mother was even scarier than Voldemort.

Hazel used to wonder how her father could fall in love with that woman, such a foul personality was bitter to even be close to. Yeah, maybe her mother was indeed good looking and drop dead gorgeous, but no beauty in the world could hide the monster she is.

"I have a present for you" her mother said as she sat down on a chair. She took out a small box from her dress and placed it on the coffee table. "Go on"

Hazel warily walked close, this was all too weird for her. First she spends the night in her father's home, then Astral wishes her happy birthday and then even her mother dares to give her something? She must have shifted realities.

Once she grabbed the small box, Hazel opened it with caution and in the inside there was a small ring. It was a snake in the form of a ring, it was actually beautiful. Full of diamonds and it seemed to be constantly moving once she puts it on.

"Your father gave it to me"

This took Hazel off guard. Her father? And even her mother was daring to give her this? Now she was thinking the killing curse or some dark magic would have come out of the box but it was far from that.

"Thank you, mother" she said, although she wasn't very thankful. After some awkward minutes of the three of them standing there without saying anything, Hazel excused herself to her room.

Once the door was closed, she allowed herself to show emotions. She took off the ring and threw it to the wall out of pure anger. Hazel fell to the ground and for the first time in years she allowed herself to show her hurt feelings and cried with silent sobs.

She hated herself, her life and everything she has even been through. She couldn't even imagine a future where she is actually happy, happiness was such a strange feeling she wasn't even sure how it felt.

How dare her mother even show a little gratitude in her birthday with a present that came from the person she hates most in the world.

Wandering around the Merrythought Manor was always scary, one could never know what they'll face each time a door was opened. While she walked to the left wing of the house she suddenly heard a knock at the door.

Without hesitation Hazel ran like a little girl downstairs to open the huge oak door.

For a moment she couldn't comprehend why her father was standing right there, as if he didn't just knock on the Merrythought Manor front door. But the minute the man didn't smile back at her and instead a frown was on his face, Hazel quickly stepped back in fear.

"Can I help you?"

His stormy grey eyes drank her in, his stare looked intense even for Hazel.

Grey met grey.

Two pair of eyes who could have been best friends if the time was right.

But the universe was never at his side and instead Regulus Black never had the opportunity to meet his niece.

And he just did.

"I'm looking for your mother, Corvina Merrythought?"

The feminine carbon copy of him darkly stared at him, her brain thinking too hard trying to know where he has seen the man before.

"I'm Regulus..." he spoke again, "Regulus Black"

"That cannot—he... he's dead"

"Was I?" He joked, his smile too similar to hers.

For a moment she thought she was dreaming, the thought of meeting the man everyone said she took after excited her. But with the way he spoke she was already crumbling in fear.

"I'll go get her for you" she spoke after a long silence, "You can come in"

The huge door shut with a loud noise echoing all around the house.

As if she was called, her mother walked, no, practically ran down the stairs and threw herself to her uncle.

Hazel stood there listening to her mother cry, her loud sobs reminding her for the first time in her life that her mother was actually capable of feeling and loving.

Nothing she has ever been shown her entire life.

"Leave right now if you don't want a punishment" she heard her mother threatened.

Hazel observed Regulus one more time. Everything about him resembles her father, every sibgle thing about him.

Maybe that's why she never wanted to look away from those exact same grey eyes she has.

And without even looking back, Hazel walked away towards her room. Her mind running with questions. The most important one?

Why the fuck was Regulus Black proclaimed dead if he was in fact, alive?
