I sat with Jack in the tree for at least an hour. We only talked once about how beautiful the scenery was and after that was silence. It wasn't an awkward or uncomfortable silence; we were enjoying each other's company. There was no need for talking.
Jack's back was slumped against the tree trunk as his legs dangled off the branch he was sitting on. I sat in the middle of the branch and looked at the view. The sun dipped in and out of the clouds. I looked over to Jack to see him gazing at me. I blushed slightly and asked, "Why are you looking at me that way?"
"I'm just thinking," he smiled, "Just thinking about how before 7.45am, we had never had so much as a conversation. Now, here we are. I took you to my favourite spot in the whole country."
"Oh," I softly said as I turned my head back to the scenery. A million thoughts ran through my head. Is he still staring at me? Why is he still staring at me? Should I keep talking? Should I go over and sit beside him?
My temptation got the best of me as I scooted over to him. I sat in between his legs and leaned my back down onto his chest. He adjusted the angle so we were at a slant. He whispered, "I've never been this close with a girl before. I don't want to seem awkward but I don't know what to do."
I giggled softly. I reached back and found his hands. Controlling his hands, I wrapped his arms so that they were just below my ribcage. I whispered, "Do what you want to do."
He pulled me up slightly and rested his chin on my left shoulder. He whispered, "I could stay like this for a long time."
"Me too," I whispered.
We lay like this for quite a while. I was at peace. His breath against my neck sent shivers down my spine but yet gave me a warm feeling inside. It seemed like he hadn't shaved this morning as I could feel the minimal stubble against my collar bone.
I was about to drift off to sleep and I think Jack was too when we heard a twig snap. We both jolted up. He looked around us and whispered, "We should go."
I nodded in agreement. He jumped down onto the branch that we used to get up. He looked up at me, waiting for me to follow. I shook my head, "I'll fall. I don't trust myself."
He held his arms up and said, "But you trust me. I'll catch you." I was very hesitant but he was very persistent. In the end I pushed myself off the branch. I trusted Jack but it didn't mean that I wasn't terrified.
He caught me bridal style. He placed me down gently before he made a short jump to the soggy leaves on the ground. I shrugged and said, "I'll need my shoes back."
He handed me the shoes that were sitting on the ground. I put them on and jumped down, landing with a squelch. He took my hand and we began walking through the trees again. He stopped walking and looked about cautiously. He whispered, "Someone's here."
We heard footsteps from behind us when suddenly a springer spaniel came bounding up to us. Jack let go of my hand and crouched down. The dog ran up to him and Jack stroked him whilst smiling like an idiot.
A woman walked up to us and said, "Jack, what are you doing out here?"
Jack stood up straight and took my hand in his, intertwining our fingers. He said, "Mom, I came out here with Rachel. I get the bus with her."
"Isn't that your hoodie?" She asked, pointing to the hoodie I was wearing. Not even a hello?
Jack groaned, "Yes mom. That is my hoodie and Rachel's wearing it. We just came out here for a walk."
"Oh right," she began walking off with the dog and said, "Be back in half an hour. Come on Pepper." Pepper must be his dog,
"She seems nice," I lied awkwardly, "She looks just like you. Tall with really dark hair and pail skin."
He swayed our hands lightly as we walked. He said, "Sorry about her. She's never been fond of my friends. Actually, she's never been fond of the concept of me actually having friends."
"It's okay. I understand why she's weary of your friends," I sighed, "But I'm not like him. I won't hurt you."
We made our way through the woods and up to the fence. He climbed to the top and then helped me over. We walked down the street together. He asked, "Which house is yours?"
"37. what's yours? You know, for future reference," I chuckled alone with him.
He smiled widely at me and said, "39. Mine's directly opposite yours! Is your room at the front of the house?"
"Yes. Oh my word, is yours?" Suddenly the excitement bubbled within me.
He nodded and we stopped at the end of our driveway. I smiled, "I had fun today. I mean, it was a different experience as I broke some rules but I liked it."
"Sounds like we went on a date," he chuckled.
"You wish that you could date me," I stated sarcastically.
He smiled, "Just wait. In about a week, you'll be begging for me."
"Oh. Vain are we?" I playfully hit his arm.
He chuckled, "I'm joking. Yeah I had a good time too. Put your number into my phone so we can arrange to walk to school tomorrow," he took his phone out and handed it to me and I did the same to him.
Once we exchanged numbers we have each other an awkward end-of-friendly-day-out hug and parted ways into our own houses.
