Fowl Manor
Although the immediate issue was over, Artemis was still perplexed by the last predicament they had gotten into.
The girl was just too strange. There had to be something else to her. Honestly, she seemed sort of dumb. But Artemis knew that this was not the case. He had seen the intelligence behind her eyes. And the coldness her green eyes displayed. A few years ago, Artemis would have gave off the same vibe. But no more.
She seemed too detatched from the situation. And she called my communicator, which is impossible when it is undetectable and has no number. She isn't just an ordinary girl, he thought.
I'm sure Holly took a picture with her helmet camera, Artemis thought. Artemis turned on his computer, and in seconds he was searching through the People's database. Within minutes, he had located a suitable picture. The girl's green eyes stared back at him. Her face was framed by blond hair. She was actually very pretty. Using his own scanning program, he searched for online matches for the girl's picture. And with the help of a key word: Jade.
Minutes passed as the computer searched through terabytes and terabytes of information. At last, it found a match.
A birth record and a few articles. Artemis started with her birth record.
First name: Jade
Last name: Hanzid
Mother: Lana Hanzid
Father: unknown
Origin: Irish
Date of birth: 7/8/99
Artemis jotted down a few notes and then moved on to the articles. Well, to be honest, they weren't really articles. They were files containing anything that Jade Hanzid was mentioned in. Even if they were supposed to be confidential. The first file was from her school, it was labled Counsiling Records for Student, Jade Hanzid.
Jade has made hardly any progress in the past six months. Part of the problem is her knowlede. She can answer every question I ask with textbook accuracy. I know that there is something troubling her, but she won't let me know what it is. I'm sure that it has something to do with her mother. Jade is by far my most difficult case yet. She comes in everyday, wearing the same smug smirk. She is aware that I am slightly perplexed about her, and she seems to find joy in confusing people. No matter what I try, she sees through it. I have found that she is no danger to others, it is just a matter of if she is a danger to herself. I hope that she will open up sometime in the near future.
Dr. Po
The next report was of similar quality. That's interesting, Artemis thought. The doctor mentioned something about her mother. Artemis started another search: Lana Hanzid. The computer came up with slightly less information than it came up with for Jade. A few newspaper articles and records. First, Artemis looked over her birth records.
First name: Lana
Last name: Hanzid
Mother: Willow Hanzid
Father: Alby Hanzid
Origin: Irish
Birth date: 9/2/79
The first article was dated in 10/29/99.
A resident called police yesterday night, out of concern for her neighbors. The woman next door had had a baby this year, and was a single mother. The neighbor had stated that two days ago, she was sitting out on her patio when the woman had got in her car and drove away. The neighbor said that she did not see the woman put the baby in the car. "I watched her the whole time," she said. "I have always been curious about her. I thought she could have just been going to the store, but when she didn't return I became worried. I knocked on the door but recieved no answer. After a while, I thought I heard a cry and that's when I called the police." Today, police attempted to contact the woman, but to no avail. The police eventually forced entry into the home. There, they found the infant crying. She was in her crib, and had obviously been neglected. The baby was rushed to the hospital, where she was given emergency care. The baby is expected to be fine. It is now a matter of tracking down the mother and deciding if the mother should remain in possesion of the child. We will update you on any new information on this case.
Wow, Artemis thought. No wonder she is like that. This is possibly the worst dysfunctional family story I have heard. Artemis clicked on the next article. Dated 10/30/99
Update
Three days after police found a infant neglected and left home alone, they have tracked down the mother of the child. Police found the woman in Dublin, staying at a hotel. She had booked the room for six nights. They found the woman extremely intoxicated. Police asked around the hotel for imformation on the woman. We now know that the woman's name is Lana Hanzid. A few people told of what she had been doing over the past few days. It seems that she had spent a fair amount of time at the club. Apparently, she has a knack for partying. Once Lana Hanzid is sober, she will be interrogated. Afterwards, she will be put on trial which will determine where her child will ultimately end up.
That is terrible, Artemis thought. I can't imagine what it would be like to grow up with a mother like that. Even though his mother had had her share if problems, it was nothing compared to this.
There were a few more articles, all of which had something to do with counseling.
Yet another dysfunctional family drama, Artemis thought. And I am the one that uncovers it.
