"Jinnie!" Little Y/N smiled wide, and put her fork back into her bowl, excited to get a call from her favorite person in the world.
"Baby, are you okay?" The comforting, familiar voice echoed through the phone.
"Mhmm, I'm okay! I'm eating macaroni and cheese."
"Oh, you are?"
"It's yummy but it could be yummier." She giggled as she poked it with her fork, playing with her food. "I was being a chef but Namjoon told me to stop being a chef cause I really wanted to put sprinkles in it," she huffed, stabbing a few pieces with her fork. "He doesn't believe that I know all of the professional chef tricks. He's just a dummy. Everything is better with sprinkles!"
Seokjin chuckled softly on the other line, relieved that her father must not have come home yet. But his voice still sounded different. There was something so monotone about it. He didn't sound as enthusiastic as usual. He didn't laugh the same. He wasn't even excited about her sprinkle chef trick! Y/N knew that something was off. She blinked a few times and put her fork down, beginning to feel worried. Her voice grew soft.
"...Jinnie?"
"Yes, darling?" He replied with a scratchy throat, trying to force himself to sound natural.
"Are you sad?"
"No, I'm not sad. I'm just..." his voice trailed off, not wanting to finish his sentence.
"Just what?"
I'm just scared.
"Don't worry, I'm okay. Eat your dinner."
"You're okay?"
"Yes, princess."
"Okay, I eat food now!"
On the other line of the call, Seokjin smiled against the phone that he balanced between his shoulder and cheek and turned the steering wheel. She was the only person who could possibly make him smile like that with open cuts and bruises across his body. It was so hard to figure out how to do this. He needed to stop stalling but he couldn't bring himself to get to the point. She was obviously in little space again. How could he possibly tell a four-year-old to hide for her life? He needed to act fast- and without scaring her too badly.
"Y/N, can you do something for daddy?"
Her ears perked up, a little smile curling at her closed lips.
"Mhmm!" She mumbled before swallowing the food in her mouth.
"I want you to take your food and bring it to your room."
"My room?" Y/N crinkled her eyebrows together. "I don't think I'm supposed to eat in my room."
"It's okay, baby. You can eat in there. But I need you to go fast, okay? And lock the door behind you."
"Fast?" She scooped the bowl of macaroni into her arm and started hopping across the tile floor towards the stairs. "Okay, I go fast!"
"Good, good." Seokjin let out a quiet, bittersweet laugh, hearing her breath through the phone as she ran up the stairs.
"Oh, Hi Namjoon!" He could hear her lean away from the phone, greeting her butler as she continued to run.
"Oh, Y/N, wait wait-" Seokjin began, "Can you pass the phone to him for a moment, dear?"
"Okaaaay, but you'll talk to me again after, right?"
"Yes, of course. You can take the phone right back afterwards."
