When classes were done, I could only rush to the front door, maybe just for the first day I could ignore the inhuman amount of homework math has to offer and instead, hang out with the girls maybe.
"Hey Anne." Josie, Ruby and Diana greeted me simultaneously when I got to the front staircase.
"How are you guys for today?"
"I have absolutely nothing!" Ruby exclaimed
"Totally free!" Diana smiled
"Sorry, can't manage." Josie added
"What? Why?"
"Sorry Anne, I found a job"
"Ooh, what are you working with?!"
"I'll be in the salon, doing old ladies' haircuts mostly" Josie rolled her eyes, she didn't seem so excited "but at least I can make some money, right?"
"Seems good to me. I was wondering if we could go do something today, just for first day sake's."
"I'm in!" Ruby said
"Me too!" Jumped Diana
"Oh boy there you three go again, little bookclub" Josie rolled her eyes, smirking in remembrance.
"See you, Josie." I said, grabbing Ruby and Diana's hands
"Later losers."
Oh Josie, she was such a prick but we loved her for it. Her bleakness used to upset me a lot during eight and ninth grade, but from a year on that bleakness had developed into a dark sense of humor which, with all my extravagant positivity, balanced the group pretty well.
"So, guys, I was thinking we should head to the beach, maybe have a picnic and—"
"Where you guys headed?"
"Hi Gilbert!" Ruby wheezed.
"Oh, hi Blythe we're just gonna hang out for a while, if you're interested you can meet us! It's easy, you just have to go down to, uh, it's-none-of-your-business street, make a left on leave-me-alone boulevard and take the express bus to downtown suck-it?"
Gilbert looked at me confusedly, no smart smirk on his face and shifted his weight from foot to foot. I might've exaggerated a bit on that.
"Okay Anne, first day and it's already like this. I'll leave you alone and 'suck it' I guess, sorry for bothering. Diana, Ruby, see you tomorrow."
"See you Gilbert..." This time Ruby let out a sight in disappointment.
"Why'd you do that, Anne?" Diana promptly asked me, she didn't look to happy either.
"I— It's just... I mean... Oh whatever! He'll get over it!"
"Anne, you were really mean. Totally uncalled for, honestly."
"Anne, I like him! How is he going to like me back if my friend doesn't let him get around us without getting a slate to his face or an unbelievably large amount of insults!"
"You what? You like Gilbert? As in you have feelings for Gilbert Blythe?"
"I've had since eight grade, you moron!"
"I'm sorry, I thought it was over!"
"Well, it isn't, but now the possibility of him liking me back is!"
"Ruby, please forgive me..."
"Hold up Anne, Ruby isn't the one who needs to forgive you." Diana, always, mothering me with sensible advice, was quick to point out I was apologizing to the wrong person.
I blushed with shame. "You're right. I really did exaggerate with Gilbert, I don't know why but I just panicked when he came to us, did not quite know what to do and he was freaking me out the whole day!"
"No Anne, you were freaking out with the fact that he's here, that now you have to deal with him and live around him again!"
"It wasn't because of that!"
"Whatever you choose to think, Mrs. Know It All, you have to apologize to him. We can hang out tomorrow or something."
"But why!? Why do we need to postpone the bookclub reunion because of Gilbert?"
Now it was Ruby who was shouting and giving me a lesson. "We're not postponing it because of Gilbert, we're postponing it because you have to correct something you did. Sorry to parent you like that but God, you were unbelievable there for a moment. I love you Anne, but please listen to us."
"Ruby's right and you know it, Anne. See you tomorrow, love you."
And then they were off. I felt bad, I felt like I had just arrived in Avonlea and everyone I didn't know in class looked at me like I was some sort of creature.
Well, everyone except maybe, Gilbert.
