It Started with a Game of Football

Summary: Almost every Christmas since 1914, Germany and England would end the holiday with a game of football. This year will be no different...well...except for one thing.

England stared down the blond nation standing before him. His opponent returned the glare from across the way. A bitter cold nipped at their faces as they stood in the freshly fallen snow. Before England could charge, a round object whizzed past his head, barely missing him.

"Don't let your guard down," Germany called from across the field.

Slightly annoyed at the comment, England wound up his leg and booted the ball, hitting Germany in the face. "Don't let your guard down," he mimicked as the taller nation went to pick up the ball (trying to ignore the stinging of his face). Germany let out a small chuckle as he rose back up to look at his opponent. England felt his cheeks grow warm at the sound. After all these decades of playing with him, he never had heard Germany laugh, nobody (except maybe Italy and/or Prussia) probably had. As the warm feeling spread, England's heart began to race.

You see, England had had a crush on the Germanic nation for awhile now. Although the two rarely hung out, they had had many conversations and times to get to know each other by playing these games of football each year. England felt Germany understood him well compared to many other nations. For the past decade, he had been trying to build up the courage to properly confess his feelings, but with no success. But this year would be it...at least he hoped it would be it.

With his heart beat only increasing, England made his way across the field. His walk turned into a jog and his jog turned into a run. He did not know how long this burst of courage and desire would last.

"Are you okay?" Germany asked, wondering why England was running over to him (he was pretty sure that their game was still paused since the ball was still in his hand). Germany continued to call out to the approaching nation, but it seemed to fall on deaf ears. Germany grabbed England's shoulders, "hey answer me. Are you okay?"

"I...I...Um," England stammered. His mouth was now dry and his voice caught in his throat. Germany's pale lips twisted into a frown, growing concerned for his friend. With their noses almost touching, England's courage began to fail. All he could do was stare back into Germany's deep blue eyes. Although stern, they were still tender and comforting.

"Oh bloody hell!" England muttered as he grabbed the German's face pulling him down slightly to allow their lips to meet. Germany didn't move, or kiss back, but he didn't pull away either. England could feel the German's face getting hot. England knew his own face was turning red as well, but honestly, he was too happy in that moment to care. Germany's lips were so soft, he felt he could stay like that forever. But sadly they had to part as the need for air became an issue. England pulled away, but didn't let go of Germany's face.

" So," England rasped, "um, how was that?"

Germany remained frozen. He attempted to say something a few times, but was unable to form any real words. It was England's turn to frown

     "Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't realize..."

"It...it was great!" Germany interrupted, looking averting his gaze, "it was...it was...amazing"

"Oh...Good. That's good!" England said, his nerves catching up to him. The two remained silent for awhile, neither having the bravery to look at each other. What was to happen now? Germany was the one to finally break the quietness:

"You know, I was just thinking about staying in London until the new year instead of going home on the twenty-sixth. Perhaps we could go out to eat this weekend."

England gave Germany a little smile and met his eyes once again, "That would be wonderful love, but for now, how about we go back and have some tea."

England grabbed Germany's hand, leading him back to his house. Despite the pounding in his chest, the cold and the snow that was beginning to fall, England had never felt warmer or happier than in that moment. He assumed Germany had felt the same as there was a small timid smile on his lips match England's. Their greatest Christmas wish came true, and it started with a game of football

Author's Note: So this is my first stab at fanfiction. Honestly there is not enough just GerUk especially on Wattpad, but it is such a cute ship. Anyway I hope you enjoy this Christmas fic. I was having some trouble trying to get things to progress (so sorry if it is off and/or choppy), but I wanted to get it out before Christmas. Anyway Happy Holidays to everyone and thanks for reading!

P.S.

Football= Soccer
