When I Need You.

He missed her like hell, the only time they’ve been away for so long was when he tried to run away to avoid falling for him. Didn’t work Rene did it?

He would give anything on earth to see her face, to listen her voice. He found himself listening to her old songs after the third month, he was scared he would forget her sweetness.

He was dying to know if she had gotten pregnant. He guessed she would have called if she achieved it? Why would she?

Every time the phone rang he run to get it, but it was never her. But that day, it was different. He picks up the phone and his heart misses a beat.

“Bonjour René” her soft voice says. “Bonjour Celine” he replies so glad she can’t see him because his smile couldn’t be bigger.

“So good to hear you” he tells her and she smiles on the other side. “I say the same” a little silence, but he doesn’t know what to say.

“How long would it take to go back to the studio?” She asks and he has a thousand questions going on in his mind, but he knows it’s not the moment.

“Next week seems good for you?” He asks. “Sound perfect” She whispers. “See you in a week, I’ll let Susanne know” “Merci” She whispers and they hang up.

She needs to be back, she actually doesn’t know what relax really means. She had tried it, and Kurt was trying to help her, but she felt so useless.

She misses him so terribly, he’s such a support for her. She knows she can’t just call him and talk about her fertility problems, he must have his own problems too, but she just needs him so much. Just listening his voice soothes her enormously.

“I’ll go back to work” she had told Kurt, and he just agreed. He knew that if she couldn’t get children, she needed something else, and music was the only thing that actually distracted her.

“I’m gonna walk today” she says to Nick as they go out to the studio on Monday morning. She’s excited, and nervous, what if those months without singing had ruined her voice? But mostly, how would Rene be? She didn’t want to admit it, she never would, not even to herself, but he was her main reason to be back.

She enters the studio and the whole world stops for her. He’s right there, in his elegant suit, talking to Jean Jacques, resting on the consola.

He turns around and sees her. Her hair is shorter, her skin has never been so white and silky. And she’s wearing a black and short turtle neck dress. She has never looked so beautiful.

“Bonjour” everybody says excited to her, but he just stays there staring at her. “Je suis content que tu sois de retour”* he says trying to disguise the trembling in his voice. “Je suis tellement contente aussi”** she smiles to him.

She’s dying to hug him. But after the distance she had put between them since Kurt started getting jelaous, she didn’t want to drive René crazy sending mixed messages.

They starts working immediately, talking about music, listening the already recorded ones. Jean Jacques stares from the corner, of course he’s an incredible producer but he’s as well an observer. He had always found Céline and René's relationship kind of intriguing.

“I’d like to do those ones again, is that possible?” She looks at Rene. “We should work hard, staying up late at night” he looks at her belly, even though she’s totally skinny, she gets the question in his eyes and shooks her head from side to side. “Nothing we haven’t done before right?” She says encouraging everybody like she used to do some time ago.

René smiles to himself, she seems to be back. His Céline.

She starts recording and her voice had never sounded better, her nervousness disappearing as soon as she hits her first high note. She’s so good to be back.

She goes on for hours, making a little pause to call Kurt and tell him she would have lunch at the studio. He doesn’t sound too excited about it, but she doesn’t want to distract herself, she’ll take care of him later.

“Okey everybody, half an hour to get some pizzas, and we will be back” René says and as soon as he finishes talking everybody leaves their places, laughing and talking.

They are finally together, and alone, for the first time in five months. She just smiles at him, standing in the middle of the booth, as he slowly walks towards her.

“Your hair, you look different” he says. Probably not the best thing to say after such a long time. “Wanted to try something new, kind of regretting it now” she giggles. “Don’t, it looks nice on you” he says, trying to find the correct words to say it.

She takes a step forward, but they are still feet away from each other. “I’m glad you like it, i thought you wouldn’t” she whispers.

He doesn’t know what to tell her. Telling her that he likes everything she does and everything she wears and whatever hair she decides to take, seems a bit inappropriate. So he doesn’t say a thing.

“Can I get a welcoming hug now?” She asks shyly, and she feels relieved when he smiles to her. “I thought you’d never ask” he walks closer to her, and she finds her way into his strong arms.

They breath deeply, feeling each other’s close, they eyes closed, not wanting to move, or breath to hard, scared of breaking the moment.

Jean Jacques had came back to look for his wallet, and saw their embrace, the peace and the love it held. She separated her head from his chest and placed it against his forehead, staring into each other’s eyes.

He had never testified something so intimate, he left without making a noise, thinking non stop about them.

"I've been thinking about you." she suddenly blurts out and his heart beat accelerates, he wants to tell her that he did too, that she was the only thing in his mind, but when he's about to speak she separates her body from his.

“So how are your kids?” She asks playing with her ring, she wants to kick herself, that's the lamest thing she could have asked but she needed a change of subject. “You know they are your age right?” He says making her laugh.

Jean Pierre is about to be a father but he omits that information, not wanting to make her feel bad about it. “They are good, enjoyed a couple of days off together” she smiles to him.

“How’s Kurt?” He asks, not knowing why. “Fine, I guess he’s relieved I’m back at work” she lets out a soft giggle that doesn’t convince him.

Everybody starts coming back, they have a couple of slices of pizza, and then back to work. The distance between them was on again.

They go on for hours and hours, it’s already dark when they leave, and she hasn’t felt better in months.

* I'm glad you're back.
** I'm so happy too.
