Anna stared down at her phone three days later. It had gone off three times in the last hour with phone calls from Klaus. She found it funny how he had the nerve to contact her after ghosting her for over a week.
"Is that him?" Anna's mom asked her noticing her mood change. Anna shrugged and finished her meal before exiting the dining room to venture to her bedroom. She decided that the next time he called, she'd answer him and give him a piece of her mind.
"What the hell do you want?" Anna asked on the first ring.
"Anna..." Klaus said into the phone as if he was out of breath.
"You have some nerve."
"Let me explain."
"I trusted you." She said unaware of the tears falling down her face. "I thought that you were the one for me. I thought that you would stick beside me no matter what. That's why I said yes when you asked me to marry you. Not because I feel bad that you're dying, but because I trusted you."
"Trusted?" Klaus repeated. "So is this you telling me that you don't trust me anymore?"
"I don't know." Anna told him honestly.
"Can you at least let me explain myself before you jump to conclusions?" Klaus took Anna's silence as a yes. "The day you called me and told me about you being pregnant was the same exact day that I had a visit with my doctor. I thought that he was going to have great news- like tell me that there's a cure or that I'm getting better, but no. There's no fucking cure and I'm actually getting worse."
Anna gasped and held the phone tighter to her ear.
"When you told me about us being parents, I got scared. I got scared that I won't have time to tend to you throughout the pregnancy. I won't have time to watch our baby take it's first steps. It scares the living shit out of me Anna. Remember how I told you how I have a year to live?"
"Yeah." Anna answered, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Cut that in half." Klaus told her. He waited for her to say something, anything. Her silence made him want to scream out in frustration. His intention was to never hurt her, not when he cared for her so much. "I don't have long. We don't have long Anna."
"I'm scared too, Klaus." Anna finally said. "I'm scared that I'll have to grow old without you. I'm scared that when our child asks about you, I will have to think of a way to let them down easy."
"Tell them how much I love you and tell them how much I love them too." Klaus said tears falling down his eyes. "Just because I'm gone doesn't mean I won't be looking over for you. I don't want to hold you back in life. I want you to find someone- I need you to find someone that will try, but won't succeed, to love you as much as I do. I need you to be happy, without me."
"I can't." Anna cried, not knowing if she was emotional because of Klaus or if the baby growing inside of her had something to do with it.
"You can." Klaus told her. Anna had never heard him sound so serious before. "Because if you don't, I'll haunt the living shit out of you."
