ROSALY

Rosaly was rushing down the long corridor leading to the cafeteria. She hadn't been able to eat anything yet, because the movement was intense that day, and she barely had time to have a glass of water between one or another customer. She was hungry, so she took the sandwich she had brought from home in her bag and sat down at one of the tables with a glass of orange juice in her hands.

She looked at the new cell phone she had bought that day, and thought this should be the tenth one. She never kept the same cell phone for long, because before she moved to Vancouver, one of the delegates who took care of her case in Brazil, had told her that it would be better if she changed her phone from time to time, because then she wouldn't give Caio much chance of finding her. Besides, she couldn't participate in social networks, or even use internet, so Rosaly lived almost oblivious to everything. When she needed to do some research, she used the internet for work, and her only source of information was the small television in her apartment, which she didn't use much, because she preferred the books that filled the bookshelf in her room and living room, and that she considered her constant friends.

Rosaly's love for reading was old. When she lived in Brazil, she always had a book by hand wherever she was, and she had brought that habit with her to Canada, and the fact that she didn't have internet at home gave her a lot of time to read all the books she wanted, without her attention being attracted by other things besides the story she was interested in.

The fact that she didn't have the Internet didn't bother her. She didn't care if she didn't know anything about celebrities, or tragedies that were around a lot, because she had had a lot of that when she was an avid teenager participating in Facebook, tiwitter and instagram. Once she understood that she would have to get used to staying away from anything involving social media, she had transferred her interests to other sources of knowledge, and reading had been one of them. She felt good, isolated in her world, and loneliness no longer affected her. At first she had missed someone to talk to when she got home, but lately this had also stopped bothering her.

Rosaly finished her snack and got up to go back to work. As she walked by John's office door, she heard him say:

- Rosely, can we talk?

- Of course—she said, feeling her old anxiety squeezing her stomach.

- Well, I was wondering if you had an appointment for tomorrow night? - Rosaly felt uncomfortable with the question. Would he do what she was imagining? She thought quickly of something to say before John made her any invitation.

- Well, I'm going to visit a friend who's sick, and I think I'll spend the whole weekend there. Why is that? -She saw the disappointment glowing in his eyes, and she felt a certain remorse for taking away any hope he might have of going out with her. John was a good person, but Rosaly didn't want to involve anyone in the drama that was her life. He deserved someone free, who didn't have a broken heart, and in her case, maybe she had it for the rest of her life, and it wasn't fair to fool a person as nice as John.

- I have two tickets to go to the theater this weekend, and it's a very good play, but I wouldn't want to go alone. So I thought I'd invite you if you were free. But, all right, I'll see if I can invite a friend to go with me.

- Thank you so much for thinking of me, and I'm sorry I can't accept it.

- No problem, Rosely. Maybe another time?- he smiled hopefully at her, but she didn't answer. She just smiled back. Then she asked his permission and went back to work, anxious to get away from him as soon as possible.

Rosaly did not know why she felt so uncomfortable in John's presence. He was not a man who should be frightening to anyone, for he always treated everyone kindly, but she had already met such a man, believed in him, and was disappointed, perhaps because of this, she was suspicious of any guy who smiled at her too kindly.

- Rosaly, table five needs to be answered. - Joseph had warned her as soon as he returned from lunch.

- That's okay. - she answered with a smile, and walked to the right table. But when she looked toward the client, she suddenly stopped, her heart racing. There was Dr. Mystery watching her as she approached.to him, He hadn't been there for a few days, and Rosaly had secretly waited for him to come. She didn't know why he fascinated her, they never exchanged more than a dozen words, and nothing more than what would be common between client and waitress. He made the order and she answered it, it was that simple. However, many times in the last few days she had found herself thinking about that smile, but she always told herself that she should forget about it, because she shouldn't and couldn't develop any kind of feeling for him.

She pulled herself together quickly, and approached the table with the order book in her hand. She had been careful to keep her eyes out of reach of his own, and asked in the coldest voice she could get what he wanted. Normally, she wasn't so dry with clients, and always tried to be nice to them, but she didn't understand her reactions to Dr. Mystery, because he confused her thoughts, so she preferred not to risk falling into the f enchantment that that smile caused on her.

- Pineapple juice. - he replied, with his strong voice that she loved.

- Wouldn't like anything to eat?- she had asked and curiously Dr. Mystery asked her opinion about what she considered a good sandwich that day, instead of ordering his usual hamburger.

- The turkey sandwich is excellent. - Rosaly had suggested it, and he had told her to add the sandwich to the order.

Then She went to get the food and drink, and came back as soon as she could, as there were still many tables to attend to and she could not waste much time on each of them. She was going to leave him when she heard him say:

- You have beautiful eyes, do you know that? - Rosaly had almost choked on his words, without realizing it, she raised her surprise look, and didn't know what to say. Her heart had accelerated as if she was running a thousand kilometers, but Rosaly forced herself not to get involved in the caress of his voice. She answered a selfless thank you and asked him if he wanted anything else, and when he had said no, she had just left and continued to do her job.

Why had Dr. Mystery paid her such a compliment? She asked herself. He had barely looked at her how could he know anything about her eyes? After thinking about it for a few seconds, she had come to the conclusion that maybe it was something he was used to doing, because being rich, he could afford to give a compliment from time to time to some unsuspecting girl who would easily believe in his conversation, but Rosaly was immune against that sort of thing, and wouldn't get carried away by a compliment that was not sincere, or so she thought.

When he left, she was sitting at a table and had her back to him, but she could feel his gaze on her, for the shiver on the back of her neck had shown her how much it affected her, but she had never looked at Dr. Mystery, telling herself that she shouldn't think about him anymore.

The rest of the day did not take long to pass and she went home at exactly five o'clock. She wouldn't have to teach dance class that night, so she preferred to walk to her apartment. There were a lot of people on the streets, and she liked to be able to observe the scenery as she went to her condo. The temperature was beginning to drop and she sensed that there would be snow that night. Rosaly hastened the pace, as she wanted to get home soon. She was planning to make hot chocolate and popcorn, and finish the day watching an old movie on TV.

As soon as she arrived,s he took a hot bath and picked up the ingredients for the popcorn and the chocolate in the closet. So, he should take out the trash, because it would be collected the next day by the condo's janitor. She put everything in a black bag, and opened the front door to leave it near the entrance as all the residents were instructed to do. Rosaly was almost entering her apartment again, when she saw a figure coming toward her. It was dark, so she couldn't identify first who was the person who was there. The first thing that came to her mind was "Caio," and such a thought made her lean against the doorpost, close her eyes, and a loud scream came out of her throat.
