I'd been throwing up all week. Everything I did; even if I just got up to get a glass of water, I ended up feeling lightheaded. Nauseous. I was just so sick, and it was tiring me. I didn't have the energy to do anything, and school was going to start next week.
I was in the bathroom one morning; I had just finished ridding my breakfast, when mom comes in, frowning.
"Baby, let's go", She says, pulling me to my feet, "It's going to be okay, we just have to get there".
"Get where?", I ask worriedly, "Where are we going?".
"Honey, I think it's time we have a doctor take a look at you", She says; still frowning, "Don't you?".
I nodd; just a little, and mom smiles; just a little.
"I really don't think this is a bug", She says, as she buckles Mckayla and Kenedy into the car.
"Well, what do you think it is?", I ask slowly; my stomach is slowly entangling itself with fear and anxiety.
Mom sighs, "I don't know. I really don't know".
"Mommy", I whisper.
"Yes, baby?", She whispers back, as she pulls away.
"I'm scared".
Mom nods, and then says, firmly, "Riley, so am I. So am I".
Later (Currently In The Waiting Room)...
"Mama?", Kenedy asks, "Why'd we have to come here?".
"For Ri", She says, gently, while stroking her hair.
"Is Ri sick?", She asks, clearly confused.
"Yes, sweetie", Mom says, "Riley's very sick".
I cringe at that. How sick could I be?
"Riley Reinhold?", Someone calls.
"C'mon let's go", Mom says, grabbing Kenedy's hand, and hanging on to a sleeping Mckayla.
"Riley?", The nurse says, "Why don't you come back with me? Ma'am-you can just wait out here...it wont take long".
My anxiety grows even more, as this stange, tall lady shuffles down a narrow hall. There's doctors everywhere. Some running, some helping other patients, and some just standing there; staring. The nurse keeps walking along; skipping her scratchy blue flats on the floor. It's bothering me. Scritch-scratch-tap. Scritch-scratch-tap.
"Okay, love, here we are", She says, "Take a seat".
I sit, relucuatly, and she starts clicking away at her computer.
"The doctor will be in shortly; just sit tight, try to relax", She smiles, "I'll be down the hall if you need anything".
At first I just sit there, frowning, and then I start looking; frowning at everything I see.
Medicine, tests, grinning patients.
"I'm a cancer survivor".
"It's not too late".
"Be there for your loved ones".
*Knock, knock*
A short, stalky man with black hair and a goute walks in. He's not smiling at all.
"Hi there", He says, "I'm Dr. Hunt".
"Hi", I whisper.
"Shy, huh?", He says dryly, "Well, I'm gonna ask you a few questions, so you'll have to speak up, sweetie. Ok?".
