"Six months!" Shouted his mother. "Six months you've reigned and without a queen. You need an heir for this kingdom." She demanded. She was fairly outraged, because her son - now King of their country - had denied yet another proposal for a marriage that his mother had organized. And he was still refusing to attend any dates she had set up.
"Eomma, the kingdom is just fine-"
"Silence!" She seethed, her voice booming in the vast and open throne room, bouncing off the marble walls. She gripped the handle of her seat, clearly quite agitated by her son's willful disobedience. "Seokjin, I will not have this. You are going to marry. It is a must, not an option!"
Seokjin begged to differ, he found no need to marry for the sake of it. He didn't want to throw his time away to dedicate to some woman when he could spend it righting wrongs and enhancing the quality of his kingdom and more importantly the country.
His mother clearly disagreed with such responses. "You are to report to every meeting that I set up for you from this day forward. Am I understood?" She demanded coldly, her gaze stern and hard on him. He may have been king, he having inherited the crown from his late father and his older brother having resigned with intent to lead an average life, he was the last heir.
"Eomma, this is nonsense-!"
"I was not asking for your approval." She spat, fire in her eyes. Seokjin sighed heavily, his large chest weighed with reluctance. His head drops, gaze set on the floor. His mother settled as he finally showed his obedience, she was still his mother after all, but it was about time she retired from her role as queen in the country. Seokjin had to prepare for that, like it or not. "You will choose your bride. I advise you choose wisely, because this woman will be bound to you for their rest of your natural lives." She allowed, sitting tall with her most excellent posture. Seokjin felt a slight bit of relief, certain that his mother sympathized in that she knew that he at least deserved a chance to enjoy the other person to some degree.
Regardless, his feet would drag to every appointment that was scheduled for him, this imminent marriage stuck on his mind.
Seokjin strolled through yet another city in his country. By now he had visited ten, many of which were where the rich resided, as it was advised by his mother that if he wasn't going to marry other royalty, then he should at least look for a woman that has a wealthy family. However, Jin kept finding the same kinds of attitudes and behaviors that generally steered him away from such personas all together. There was a common theme of greed and/or lust amongst the wealthy, as though nothing could ever be enough from anyone so long as they weren't richer than they were.
But he'd stumbled, quite literally, across a phenomenon. Seokjin knew of slavery in his country, it wasn't common and was often discouraged, but it certainly wasn't missed. He stared as a young woman dressed in tattered clothes limply wandered to an outdoor market with money in her hands. She had a different complexion than most, and despite having her head draped with a scarf, he could see how her short hair had curls and kinks he'd never seen before. All the more, what drew the most attention was the alarming obviousness of her bones. She'd clearly been starved, and Seokjin took sympathy. He wasn't gullible nor clueless, so he didn't put his guard down, however the woman was in need of help. And what more could the king himself do than to offer charity, even in small efforts.
However, as he approached nearer to her, she yelped when her coins were roughly smacked from her hands, and before she could duck down to pick them up they were stolen by teenagers who were far quicker than she could have been. Jin furrowed his brows at the sight, and before he could make any kind of order towards the young people, they were gone. The woman collapsed to the ground, not out of weakness, but desperation.
