the final bell rung. i neatly placed everything inside my bag and made my way out of the class. "thank you again for catching me up sugawara!" i bowed to the upperclassman i shared a class with. "anytime, see you tomorrow!" he waved bye as i left the classroom. my first day wasn't bad at all, i feel like i made a few friends in all year groups. it was nice, but nothing like the bonds i made back at nekoma, not yet at least. shaking away the sad thought i perked up, i get to see kyo! feeling the giddy emotion of seeing how my baby brothers first day went i picked up my pace to exit the school. as i got to my locker to switch out my shoes i heard two familiar voices heading her way.
"airie! hey airie!" nishinoya's booming voice rang in my ear making me smile brightly. i turned just in time to see tanaka elbowing nishinoya's side with a smug smirk plastered on his face. "you two sure are lively," i chuckled softly closing my locker. "tch ryu's being jabbing me all day. it's getting annoying!!" he yelled his final word with major tick marks all over his spiky hair. then a thought came across my mind, i don't really know ryu's name. ryu sounds like a nickname and i've just been calling him that in my mind without any permission. "uh, um r-ryu?" i blurted out embarrassed. my pupils dilated seeing how both boys were frozen stiff. my brows furrowed and guilt welted up inside of me as i began to bow deeply ready to apologize.
but before i could open my mouth i started to hear weird croaking like mumbles. "s-s-she called me ryu!" my body straightened out, and then it was my turn to stiffen. he had watery eyes the size of watermelon and his fist were pushed up under his chin. "it was the most beautiful thing to ever hit my ears!" he whined stepping closer to me ready to pull me into a hug. but before i could react and dodge his wide arms he was being yanked back by nishinoya, who had a very angry look on his face. "noya! you have to let me hug her!! did you hear what she called me!! and without asking! i love a woman so forward!" tanaka tried to pull his way out of nishinoya's grasp but the short boy was surprisingly strong. "don't you dare!" nishinoya seethed protectively, but it was so low i barley caught it.
i stood there stunned from the massive grip nishinoya had. my eyes wandered to the wall and almost popped out of my sockets, i'm going to be late! i scrambled to collect my things and slipped out a small goodbye to the two boys. i began to to sprint down the way when i heard a voice shouting out to me, "ryunosuke tanaka! but i love it when you call me tanaka- aaahh owww noya!!" tanaka shouted. i smiled softly as i kept running, the wind picking up my long hair. i ran passed groups of students numbing apologies as i bumped into a few. my eyes lit up when i saw the daycare still in the same spot on the corner. i stopped running to fix my hair and uniform before stepping inside, "oh excuse me," i whispered as a father walked out with his daughter. after he stepped out and i stepped in i felt a pair of tiny arms wrap around my legs. "you're late!" kyo cried into my legs.
i knelt down and gently wrapped him in my arms. "i know, i'm sorry. it won't happen again," i whispered only for him to hear. i glanced up to see mori-sensai with a weary smile. scooping kyo into my arms and securing him on my hip i walked over to thank her. "ah ms. chisake- airie," she corrected herself before i could. "kyo, he had a rough first day." she said with a soft chuckle. i felt my shoulders slouch a little as my eyes scanned down to the little boy in my arms with droopy eyes. "what happened," i spoke softly. she motioned for me to sit but i declined knowing i'll wake him if i stand back up. "well, kyo didn't seem to like playing with the other kids. he also refused to nap." i nodded glancing back down at his chocolate hair.
"kyo also," she took in a big breath making my eyes shift to her, "he also bit a little boy on the wrist, he was trying to take an old pocket watch out of his backpack." her words only made me sigh deeper, i knew i should've checked his bag a second time before leaving. "i'm sorry, it was left to him by our father before he was born. it's all he has of him, i'll make sure he leaves it at home." my hand rubbed small circles on his lower back. we started to leave after saying good bye and thank you, mori-sensai dropped her hand on my shoulder. "i'm sure kyo will open up soon, don't worry about it." she gave me a small smile which i nodded to and left. it was a little chilly due to the rain from earlier in the day. i wrapped my arms around him more to keep the warmth focused on him.
the walk back to our home was longer that normal, maybe because of the extra weight on my body or maybe because i was dreading having the same talk with kyo for the thousandth time. we were down our street when the little boy started to stir in my arms. "onee-chan?" he mumbled softly. "almost home kyo," i nodded when he hummed back and tucked his head back into my neck. once i finished fumbling with my house keys and unlocking the door i set kyo down to remove his shoes then mine. "i'm hungry!!" he over dramatically whined. "go get into pajamas okay, i'll start dinner." i ruffled his hair before he could run off. i removed my blazer as i entered my room and hung it up. i removed my uniform and folded it neatly in its place on the dresser, getting into a pair of black thick leggings and a too large for my body pull over sweater to sleep in.
i heard kyo playing with his toys in his room as i left mine, i smiled knowing he'll be distracted for a little while. i was her my hands and started to prep for dinner, making kyo is second favorite meal to ease him into the talk. i threw the vegetables into the boiling broth after dicing them perfectly. i checked on the rice making sure it wasn't being over cooked, then i went to check on the thin slices of beef seasoned to be a tad on the spicy side. "mm something's yummy!" kyo wandered into the kitchen like he was floating by the smell. i giggled and picked him up to show him the spicy beef stew i was making, his eyes widening with glee. "spicy stew!" he cheered. "yep! now go wash your dirty hands!" he practically leaped out of my arms and ran to the bathroom. i pulled out two bowls, filled each with rice then layered the stew above it, and to top it off, i placed two slices of beef on the top.
as soon as i placed the bowls on the table kyo hopped onto his chair and grabbed his chopsticks. "thank you for the food!!" he giggled before he started to scarf down the food. i slowly took bites, but it was time. "kyo-" he cut me off by speaking over me. "i wasn't very nice today," he sighed dropping his chopsticks. "i heard," i smiled at his pout. "i'm sorry," he lowered his head. i pushed my seat out and moved over to him, picking him up and sitting in his chair with him in my lap. we sat there in silence for a little, my hand smoothing out his hair. "kyo you have to be good okay," my eyes pricked with tears. "i know it's hard with just me and you, but it's all we got now okay?" i tightened my hold around him trying not to let my tears flow. "okay onee-chan..i promise.." he nodded sniffling.
we finished our food in a small quiet. i helped kyo take a quick bath before tucking him into bed with a bed time story. his favorite was the book about a little prince who stopped time to save a little girl from her evil mother. it was one of my favorites as a girl too, my dad would read it to me every night. i sighed away the happy memory as i slid the book back into it's place on the shelf. i kissed kyo on the forehead one last time before leaving him room, only leaving the door cracked a little for some light. "alright, homework." i groaned sliding my legs under the coffee table in my living room. i started on my classes papers one by one, feeling like it's been hours. i checked my phone as i finished the last paper, only eleven o'clock.
i cleaned up the living room and shut the lights off then headed to my room. quietly i pulled the covers over myself, the light from my phone illuminating the room. it was a brand new phone with a brand new number. i sighed as my finger hovered above the send button, it feels wrong trying to contact him now. after three weeks without a single word i'm sure he'd be upset with me, they all would. i erased the simple, hey..it's me, and locked my phone. tomorrow's a new day.
