Amelia

"Any word yet on Gene?" I frantically asked the first nurse that I saw come out of the surgery room.

"Not yet, I'm sorry," the nurse replies before walking away. A strain cry escapes my throat.

"Amelia," Christian softly calls out to me and wraps my still shaking body against him, "You have to sit down. Rest."

"I can't Christian. How can I when Gene is in there on the brink of death because of me?" I cried into his chest. I've been crying nonstop since we've gotten into the ambulance. The thought that Gene can die, because of me. I would never forgive myself.

"Look at me," he lifts up my chin to him, "this is not your fault Amelia. Don't you ever blame yourself."

"But I – "

"None of it," he says firmly cutting me off.

He moves us over to the waiting area making sure I sat down. He takes my hands in his clasping them within his before smoothing over the back on my palm.

"Everything will be fine," he gently whispers though his gaze seems to be a mile away. I know Christian. I know that he's worry and angry. Although he's been trying to calm me, he's been tense ever since we got here.

"Miss Lovell?"

I turn to the direction of my name. Two males wearing badges stood there a short distant away from us. "We'd like to ask you a couple questions if you're up to it."

I look back to Christian and he gives me an encouraging nod.

Turning back to the gentlemen I answer, "Anything. If that will help bring that asshole in."

After recounting my haunting past and giving the officers all the details I know and after interviewing Christian as well, the detectives left saying they will come back to interview Gene, if only his surgery goes well of course. I know they didn't mean it in any disrespectful way, but I wanted to scream at them that Gene was going to be okay. But I, myself wasn't so confident in my own thoughts. Christian of course offered them anything they may need. Man power, money, even any of his properties to use as stake outs if they needed it. An officer was left behind to make sure my brother doesn't return to finish what he started.

I don't know how long we waited after. Every second that passed by was bringing me closer to insanity. I needed to know something. Anything that Gene was okay. Finally, a doctor emerges from the surgery room.

"How is he?" I said getting up instantly and basically running over to him.

"Does he have any family?" The doctor solemnly asked.

"Why?? What happened?" My heart skipped a beat and goosebumps spread throughout my body. The worst had happened I thought.

"There was a loss of a lot of blood."

My heart sinks and I can feel fresh tears burning in the back of my eyes.

"But... He's a lucky one. Fortunately, the hospital was supplied with enough blood. And an inch over and the blade would have hit a major artery. He's resting now. And you can see him when we transfer him to a regular room. We just wanted to contact his family to inform them of course."

"Thank God," I managed to choke out. Relief. It felt like a heavy weight was lifted of my shoulders. Shaking my head I added, "he has no family."

"Please give him the best room you have," Christian said.

"Of course Mr. Zain," he replies before walking away.

I turn to Christian and jump into his arm. I smile for the first time after the incident. Tears stream down my face, but they were happy tears. He holds me close and gently pats my back.
