"Okay class, let's start the new academic year with the first chapter in Mathematics. Open your books to page two. Let's begin!" said Mrs Perry with the only enthusiasm that was present in the class. High school looks pretty good in the movies, but in reality - not so much.
There are just seven periods, and lunch break is after the third period. That's going to be my life for the rest of the year. I am going to study, do my homework every day, talk to my BFF, and go home to watch Netflix and cry when Augustus dies in 'The Fault in Our Stars.' My life is not that much fun, but I will go through it with a smile. A fake smile.
"So what are your plans for today?" asked Susan. She was hoping that I might come up with an idea for a girls night out or something like that... well, I am not.
"Well... just walking with you right now, and then going home, then doing some home..." I replied, but before I could finish...
"STOP! No, I can't let you do homework. It's so boring. Let's have some fun - like maybe attending a junior and senior 'getting to know each other'... party."
"No, I can't. Today we have got a lot of homework to do. It is the high school we are talking about; these are supposed to be the golden years of our career so... no distractions." I replied by nodding my head in a 'no.'
"Oh, come on Anna! Stop being such a lazy butt. I know you want to come?"
"No, I don't," I replied immediately, and in a blunt manner. I felt guilty as soon as I said it. A party was the last thing I wanted to go to since it would damage my antisocial life schedule.
Susan continued by saying, "Okay fine. I will not force you, but I just thought that maybe if you would accompany me it would be nice. I thought that as my best friend you will always be by my side and never leave me alone."
Oh god, her emotional blackmailing has started. Even though I know she does it, I always believe her and agree to everything she says. But today, I will not. I will not look into her eyes. I guess if I do that, it will be easier for me to ignore her. "I trust you, Anna. And I know you will always help me." Come on, Anna. You can do it, just say no.
"Even Josh is coming. You know right, that I have had a crush on him since fifth grade. Are you not going to help me at least talk to him?"
"Okay." Damn it. I fell for her trap again. And the best part about this is that I can never do the same emotional blackmail to her since I never ask her to do such things. By the time I said okay, we had reached the front side of my house.
"Okay, then I will come to your house at 6 pm. The party starts at 8. I will get all the makeup that we need since I know you don't have any. I hope you have a black dress. So, put on some cute little black dress as that would look really good on you. And you have those strappy..."
I cut her off and said, "Why don't we discuss this when you come back here at six, alright?" I felt nervous already thinking about it.
"Okay, Anna." She turned left to go towards her house but stopped midway. Looking straight into my eyes, she said "Thanks a ton, Anna. I know you don't like to go to such social things, but you still are. I love you so much."
Those words put such a wide smile on my face. I love you too Susan. And I am ready to do anything to help my best friend in any way possible - whether she needs me or not. Because that is what BFFs are for. I hate parties but for her, I will go.
I took the house keys out of my bag, unlocked the front door, and went straight to the kitchen. The kitchen was right next to the living room. It could be seen clearly from my bedroom upstairs. I don't use the kitchen much. Mom used to, but after she left, nothing. I cook stuff like grilled vegetables or bake in the oven - nothing complicated. And when I'm not in the mood to cook - which is almost all of the time - I order take-out. Dad also does the same thing when he comes home late.
So I opened the fridge, took out some leftovers from the other night, and heated them up in the microwave. That's my lunch. As I sat at the dining table, I thought of the days when Mom was in the kitchen cleaning the marble linings of the counters. She used to cook meals that I couldn't wait to eat when I came home. Even though I don't remember much, I used to love being in the kitchen; it was my favourite place in the house. The glass plates, Mom and Dad's favourite cups for wine, the small window in the corner that let in the fresh breeze. Those perfect family moments. As I was taking a bite, I noticed that a teardrop fell on the hand in which I was holding my spoon. I did not even realize that I had started crying.
I washed my face that had filled with tears and then ate my food. I saw the time; it was already 5 pm. I had one hour left before Susan came over. So I rushed up the stairs to my room. My room is in such a mess. I started cleaning my bed first. I folded all the clothes that were lying in a mess on the bed and put them neatly into my closet. Then I cleared my desk that was filled with so many books. Lastly, I cleared the mess that was on the floor. Done. Half an hour left to complete my homework. I can do it.

"I think that the black lace dress with a heart-shaped neckline will look amazing on you," Susan said. She looked certain.
"But doesn't it look too fancy? I mean, I like this dress, but...
"You will look amazing in it, Anna. Don't worry, I know what I am saying. This dress will be perfect for the party today, so let's get ready." I trusted her instincts and wore the dress without another complaint.
Susan had already chosen her dress, so we started getting ready. I put on my dress which ended right above my knees. I wore classic black high heels. On my neck was a delicate three-layered necklace, and on my ears were a pair of black earrings that perfectly matched the dress. Susan also looked pretty in her red dress with matching red heels. She looked so beautiful. She applied a little make-up on me because I don't like wearing that much of it. Susan did the same make-up for herself, but wore red lipstick instead of the pink lip gloss that I had applied.
"Let's party!!!!" Susan had a lot of energy - more than I would ever have, for a party. Yes, this excitement was not only because we were going to a party, but because the party was at Josh's house.
Susan thought that maybe she would get a chance to talk to Josh, or at least spend some time staring at him. I did not want to burst her bubble by telling her that Josh is actually really into his girlfriend. Especially tonight, as he has made a bet with his friends that tonight is their 'special night.' How typical of him; this is what guys in my school are usually up to.
They don't have respect for any of the girls that are in love with them. I hope Kate sees his true character tonight and stops liking him. Because he clearly is a bad boy, or maybe just a show-off, but whatever it is, it's bad.
I, on the other hand, have never been to a 'high school' party before because I was not either ready to go or was never invited. So let's see what this party has in store for me.

The party has just started and Anna is already getting nervous about the outcome.
