Dad was going to come home any minute, and here I was hastily taking rounds of my room trying to figure out how to ask him about this letter. It is not going to be easy. He will definitely first be angry that I went through his personal stuff - which is now not-so-personal, I guess. And that book in the bookshelf was as hard to get my hands on as a bad boy in a classic love story. The keys were still missing, so I could not read the book.
After all this time, I had finally accepted the fact that the main story and misery of my life was that I was part of a family that went through a divorce; and I was finally okay with this fact. I thought that that's where the mystery and drama of my life ended. Only to finally realize that my dad is hiding so many things from me. As I waited for him to come home, the bell rang.
I ran downstairs, turned the doorknob and eagerly opened the door. And standing in front of me... was Chinese take-out. Damn.
-
The place where I stood was pitch black. I could not understand whether my eyes were open or closed. I tried to find a source of light, or form an image but I could not see anything. A sudden flash of light came from above. There was no ceiling above me, just light. The light was too strong for me to look into it and make sense of the source.
"Hello?" I screamed, hoping that someone would hear me and help me get out of this weird place.
"Anna!"
That voice sounded familiar, but I hadn't heard it in a long time... Probably 6 years ago.
"Mom!"
Her image became clearer as the distance kept descending. She stopped a few feet away from me. She looked just like I had seen her the day she left. She was wearing a white shirt tucked into a high-waisted pleated skirt. She had on nude heels – the ones that I always wanted to wear when I grew older. Her hair was smooth and long. I loved her hair so much. I missed her so much. I started crying as soon as I saw her. I just could not stop those tears from falling down my face. I started walking towards her because all I wanted to do was hug her. I needed to see what it felt like to hug a person who loved me since day one of my life.
After taking a few steps, I couldn't go any further; it was as if an invisible wall was in front of me that I could not pass.
"Mom! I can't come to you!" I said, worried that she might get upset and leave me again.
"It's okay. It is enough for me to just see you. My daughter all grown up. It's such a proud moment for me to see you, but you need to be happy, Anna. And confident. That is what makes women strong. You should never show your weaknesses to anyone, even to me for that matter," she told me with a smile.
"Mom, what are you saying? I need to tell you so much. The day you left... "
Before I could complete my sentence, she said something that shocked me. "I know. He is a wolf. A bad wolf. You need to stay away from him."
"Mom, what are you trying to say? I don't understand you," I said in a confused manner. I wanted to pour my heart out to her. I wanted to let her know that I felt as if a part of me had been taken away when she left dad and I. And what she was saying was totally different. Who is this wolf Mom is talking about? Is it the one I met in the woods?
"Yes," Mom replied, looking at me.
"Really? But wait a minute... I was talking to myself in my mind. How did you hear me?" I was now so confused because so many strange things were happening. I was so scared to even think because my mind was the only safe place and now Mom had just burst that bubble.
Mom started speaking in a calm manner. She was confident and looked like she had years of experience in reading minds, "Darling, you don't need to worry about me or what I do. The only thing I can tell you now is that I can read your mind, and I have come to meet you, as this is the only place I can see you."
I looked around figuring out what place this was and I couldn't even figure out how I arrived here.
"I don't recognize this place. How will I come back to see you then, mom?"
"Your dreams. That is where we are, Anna. You are fast asleep right now," Mom replied with a smile. Her innocent eyes were gazing at me.
"So that means you have come to meet me in my dreams?" I said excitedly. Maybe my confusion could be solved in my dreams, where I could meet Mom.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrh. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrh. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrh.
"What is that noise?" I shifted my head towards the sound to find out where it was coming from. It was definitely coming from an animal, like a dog maybe. But all I could see was darkness.
"Anna!"
I immediately faced my mom to see why she was so frightened by the sounds. Her face had changed from a smile to a frown. Her breathing got heavier and her body gave up and started trembling. Her eyes could not hide the pain she was feeling from listening to that noise. How could she get scared of dogs? Mom loved them. She called my name once again. And I waited for her to talk to me.
"You need to listen carefully because I don't have much time to say this," she said.
"But what's the prob..." Mom did not give me a chance to complete my sentence.
"Questions later, Anna. He is not safe. You are not safe with him. There will be many people who you don't know, but they will want your attention. Don't get carried away. They might say they know you or might even say they are a part of your family. They are lying." She wanted to say more, but with a jerk, she turned her head towards the right. I looked right as well. I could see some creatures walking towards us; they were not humans because they walked on all fours. They looked like dogs but were a hundred times bigger. Like giant dogs... or as I soon realized - Wolves! I could only see their shadow first.
The wolf in the middle of the pack had thick brown fur. There were two others following behind him. One of them was grey and the other was dark brown. Their huge sharp fangs could not fit in their protruding jaws. Eyes in rage, ready to pounce on one of us. The only word I could use to describe them is – monsters. Their huge bodies walked gracefully past me. A werewolf was ten times bigger than any ordinary wolf. A shocking thought then occurred to me. If they are not coming for me, then... Mom! They were going for her.
"NO!!! Please don't take her away! Please!" I screamed to the wolves trying to distract them, but they did not budge.
"Anna, remember, you can't turn into these monsters." As those last words came out of Mom's mouth, they pounced on her. It was one of the worst sights I have seen in my entire life. Screaming, I ran to help mom. But I was hit by the imaginary wall in front of me. I tried and gave all my strength but I could not break it. My nose even started to bleed, but nothing could help me.
"Promise me!" I could hear her voice as she lay beneath the wolves, injured.
"Yes, Mom. I... I... promise I won't turn... into one of these monsters!" I said while trying to control the pain that I felt seeing her in such a horrifying scene. Tears were falling down my face, and then I closed my eyes. That is the last thing I remember about the dream.
