The next week passed by very quickly. It was so hectic because we had to finish our projects, complete our essays and prepare for tests. Susan, Ethan and I are now comfortable enough with each other that we speak on a regular basis. I don't even hesitate to call Ethan if I need help with anything. Things have become more stable around me. Dad came back home four days ago, but he was so busy with work that he didn't have time to complete the story he had to tell me. Tonight, he promised he would. Also, I don't need to worry much about my studies since I got A's in all my tests until now. I am one step closer to becoming a doctor.
Today, the list of first years chosen for the soccer team was released. There was a lot of rush near the notice board at school. I knew that ninety per cent of the kids were checking whether Josh was the captain again this year. He was. Even though he was the dumbest person in the school, he sure was good at playing soccer - even I couldn't deny that. Well, I was there to check whether Ethan had made it through or not. So I squeezed through the crowd and somehow made it to the list alive. Okay, so I moved my finger down the list, and I found his name in the middle. He made it! Wow, only two new people had made it and one of them was Ethan. He must be a really good soccer player. Of course, he is! I smacked my head... he is a trained hunter... duh!
During lunch Susan and I congratulated Ethan, but an exciting scene was going on at the opposite table. Josh and Kate were fighting!
"I HATE YOU, JOSH GREGORY!" squeaked Kate at the top of her lungs. It was like she was trying to make sure that every single person in the school could hear her. At least she grabbed everyone's attention in the lunchroom.
"Babe," said James in a calm voice as he slowly got up from the table that he usually sits at, with all the popular guys and their cheerleader girlfriends. He was aware that he had like a hundred eyes on him. Kate very well knew his phobia of being portrayed as a bad guy in public. He loves his fake 'perfect boy' image and nobody can change that. If they did, he would literally die! Kate is playing with his most sensitive nerve, here. I was totally fine with it though. Actually, I wanted Kate to reveal more secrets of his so that Susan realizes I was right about him from the beginning. Kate and James always clashed with each other. The bad part was, that these clashes never lasted more than five minutes - that is how perfect they are! God, it makes me want to puke thinking about this.
"We can sort it all out once I know what I did wrong." He was really good at handling her anger.
She removed her iPhone X from her skirt pocket and searched for something and finally glared the screen in his face. "What is this?" she demanded.
His eyes popped out a little as he looked at the screen, but he hid his reaction very well. I wonder what it was; I would do anything to see that picture. My wish was granted really soon, as Kate flashed the photo for everyone around to see. My only reaction was - "Oh my god."
"Is that... potato girl?" Susan whispered in my ear.
"Her name is Betty, and her dream about being popular has come true," I whispered back with a smile.
"Who is Betty?" came another whisper from my left. Ethan was new to the school, so I had to update him really quickly.
"She is the girl who sits in the left corner of our classroom. The one who nobody notices," I said, feeling sorry for Betty. She deserved better. Even though she doesn't have a slim figure like Kate's, and she doesn't wear any make-up, she is still very smart; she doesn't need fake friends to make her popular. That night when I saw her making out with James, the only thought that came to my mind was how lucky James was. At least now I know that I was not the only one who saw them kissing.
Ethan brought me back from my thoughts when he said with a grin on his face, "Was there even a person sitting there?" My jaw fell straight to the floor... that was how surprised I was by his answer.
