Song: Ain't It Fun

Artist: Paramore

Friday, February 12

It was an ordinary day, nothing special was happening. We only had a few more months until graduation, and then we'd leave this school forever.  There were only 2 periods left in the day, so we asked Ms Venn if she could excuse us from those two work periods to go work on the Lego cups that we had bought at the competition a month ago. Margaret had ordered blank white Lego pieces that we could write on and stick onto the cup.

"Ms Venn, please! We're begging you now! We desperately need to finish these cups before Ms Toreno leaves us forever!" Bella, Ryze, and I were practically on our knees, begging our teacher to let us go. She smiles mischievously, sending chills down our spine. She's definitely got something evil planned for us.

"I'll let you four go on one condition," She leans in, a grin plastered her face. "You tell me what those cups are for." We glance at each other for conformation, before agreeing.

"Fine, we can tell you, but you have to promise not to tell anybody!" I exclaim, my eyes dead serious. She nods and I whisper what the purpose of those cups are for. Ms Venn nods in understanding and dismisses us. On our way out the door, Margaret decides to steal some of our teacher's coloured tissue paper. I smack her on our way over to Mr. Adler's room that has a smaller separate room that we like to work in.

We're quiet on our way in, making sure not to be noticed by the students who were in the middle of a lesson right now. We're halfway through the doorway before someone yells at us from a desk up at the front.

"Mr. Adler, we've got guests!" Irritating as ever, Aaron. Mr. Adler swivels around in his arm chair, and rolls his eyes.

"Why is it that whenever we get trouble it's always because of you lot?" He exclaims sarcastically. We all smile at him sheepishly before thanking him and bolting into the mini-room. He's in the middle of a sentence before we shut the door on him. We can see him through the window, not looking too impressed with our stunt.

"Look guys, we'd better get to work. We've only got 3 hours left in the day, and we don't even know where Ms Toreno is right now." Margaret dumps out all her materials on counter. Paint, brushes, the tissue paper she stole, and Lego pieces are all over the place. Some of the pieces were done, while the others still needed to be finished or worked on.

"Chael, you're on glossing duty because I know you're not going to fool around with it. Kellain, Ryze, help me with painting, will you? Bella, you get the easy job of sticking on the pieces. Go, go, go, we only have a limited amount of time." Margaret starts barking out orders and we rush to comply. I always get the messy job, never the easy one.

By the time I finish glossing all the pieces, I have a migraine from the amount of focus needed to dip all those pieces. The cups look amazing though, even if we did have a few mishaps. It's 3:05 when we finish. We start wrapping the Lego cups with all the stolen tissue paper, and look for the teachers that are receiving the present. Ms Kota should be in the gymnasium, preparing for who knows what. Mr. Alexander and Mrs. Tai are in their classrooms, supposedly, and Ms Toreno is still missing.

When the bell rings, we disperse: Kellain and I to Mr. Alexander's class, Bella and Ryze to Mrs. Tai's, and Margaret to Ms Kota's location. We leave Ms Toreno's cup in the room, hoping that Mr. Adler doesn't lock the doors so we can get in to retrieve it if our missing coach would show up.

"Here's a horribly wrapped present, Mr. Alexander. I didn't do it, so don't look at me. The others did the work." He eyes the package with curiosity. The wrapping paper comes off easily, and he's gazing upon a red cup with his name in the middle.

"Oh wow, is this what you guys were smuggling inside your bags?" He laughs and examines the object in fascination.

"Yeah, no. We aren't going to talk about that." I deadpan. Mr. Alexander laughs some more, and thanks us. We ask him if he's seen Ms Toreno and he thinks about it for a little while before telling us that she may be where Ms Kota is. Kellain and I bolt out of the room and pick up the last cup before zooming off to the gymnasium. She's in the gym with Ms Kota, who's giving an introduction to robotics in here.

The two coaches unwrap the presents, and Ms Kota has tears in her eyes, before enveloping us in a hug and thanking us. Bella and Ryze arrive to the scene a few seconds later. He looks a little pale and out of breath not to mention that he keeps groaning and muttering something under his breath. His legs buckle and give out from underneath him, collapsing rather loudly to the floor.

"Ryze!" His name echos in the room as we all dart towards the boy on the floor. His eyes are hazy, darting around the room but unfocused. There was no doubt about it that his condition was worsening.

"Ryze, honey, can you hear me?" Ms Kota rushes to lift his head up and check if he was having a stroke. It appeared so.

"Someone dial 911! Ryze, you're going to be okay. Stay with me, and focus on my voice." I fumbled for my phone, ready to hit the emergency dial. Margaret was faster than me though, and an ambulance was on it's way. Ms Toreno ushered the kids that were starting to crowd around to go home and get some rest. My foot tapped anxiously against the cold floor, my mind starting to think about the worse that could happen.

My hands shake uncontrollably as the paramedics carry Ryze's body on a stretcher. I hold my hands together, rubbing them to get them warm. I paced around nervously, and texted my dad that I was going to be very late coming home. He questioned where I was going, and reluctantly let me go.

"Are you going to the hospital?" Margaret asked me. I nod my head and start heading out the front doors. She grabs my hand in time to pull me back into the building.

"Even if you did go to the hospital right now, you won't be able to see him. Let it go for today, we can go see him tomorrow." She stares into my eyes and she can tell that I'm terrified. The perks of being friends for 10 years.

"Why don't we go get some bubble tea?" She suggests. I follow her as she holds my sleeve, gently tugging me along.

It sort of reminds me of when we were kids where we would have all these wacky adventures around the streets. I was always bad with directions, so she'd take my arm and drag me along. We would pretend that we were in outer space, travelling around planets and exploring new galaxies that we would make up.

We stop in front of a familiar little shop, the scent of freshly made tapioca fills the air around it. Next to it, a card shop that I frequented when I was young and naive.

"Why don't we have a little fun?" Margaret's smile was different from the ones she wears at school. I haven't seen in a long time since we were kids. She holds out her hand, and I take it.
